The Leash Law for Dogs in MI
According to Michigan law (MCL 287.262), dogs must be kept on a leash whenever they are in public.
If you remove a dog’s leash during a neighborhood walk, you could be fined and charged with a misdemeanor.
The law provides certain exceptions for leader dogs, farm dogs and other working dogs who are accompanied by their owner or designated agent.
This statute also explains the rules for dog licensing, collars and dog tags.

Dog p**p: if not promptly and properly disposed of, can be just as detrimental to the environment and public health; same as traditional forms of litter. It can contaminate water sources, spread disease, and ruin the aesthetic and usability of communal spaces. Therefore, leaving dog p**p unattended on public property can indeed be seen as a form of littering. (and is subject to fines)
