The first year of being a new mother was a rollercoaster of emotions, challenges, and milestones. It is a year of growth, both for the baby and me. Some of the toughest challenges people don’t talk enough about that mothers face is the sleep deprivation, the around the clock care they require and even more as a walking/talking toddler! Breastfeeding was difficult in a sense of feeling resentful for the father because in the beginning I was the only one to have to wake up during the night. Now I feel selfish because I didn’t continue because I felt it wasn’t fair but now I feel I deprived my son of the better nutritional benefits of Breast milk.
Postpartum depression was also a big struggle! I don’t feel it was severe but severe enough to impact me terribly. I felt sad, anxious around others and total lack of interest in any social event. Which for me was terrible because I used to be a social butterfly! I’ve isolated myself till this day and still wish I didn’t. I traveled over 500 miles to my cousins wedding just to get there and realize I suffer from anxiety and left 30 min into it. I couldn’t handle the crowd, my child’s exhaustion, and feeling so insecure of my appearance and I didn’t feel pretty. It’s taken over my life this past year. It’s been a challenge with my physical recovery. While I have been learning to adjust my new role as a mother and balancing responsibilities such as the care for my son, house work, work, and doing my best to start a business where it could hopefully someday lead me to be able to spend all the time in the world with my son. While the first year of motherhood has been challenging, it was also a year of growth, love, and joy. It is essential to seek support from loved ones, prioritize self-care, and be patient with yourself during this transformative time. Thought I’d share some of my experiences and struggles as a new mother. You aren’t alone if you might be dealing with something similar. If you’re a father hug your spouse a little tighter this Mother’s Day! You never know what they are feeling!
