J.K. Rowling: The author of the Harry Potter series was a single mother living on welfare when she began writing the series. The first book was rejected by 12 different publishers before Bloomsbury Publishing picked it up.

Steven Spielberg: One of the most influential filmmakers in Hollywood history was rejected from the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts multiple times.

Walt Disney: He was fired from his job at the Kansas City Star because his editor said he "lacked imagination and had no good ideas." His first animation company went bankrupt, but Disney persisted — and now the company bearing his name is one of the biggest entertainment giants in the world.

Stephen King: The author's first novel, "Carrie," was rejected 30 times. He nearly gave up, but his wife encouraged him to submit it one more time, and it was accepted.

Abraham Lincoln: He faced a series of losses in his early career in politics, but he persevered and went on to become one of the United States' most respected presidents.

Albert Einstein: He didn't speak until he was four and didn't read until he was seven, causing his teachers and parents to think he was mentally handicapped. He was later expelled from school. With perseverance, Einstein later revolutionized physics with his theory of relativity.

Vera Wang: She didn't start her fashion career until she was 40. Prior to that, she was a figure skater and journalist. Today, she is one of the premier women designers around the world.
