THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF THE TOWN OF COLONIE
Cordially Invites You to a Special Presentation by
Mark Peckham
STEAMBOATS ON THE HUDSON
Sunday, November 17, 2024 - 2:00 pm
Town of Colonie Library, 629 Albany Shaker Road

The Hudson River was yesteryear’s Thruway. Steamboats dominated Hudson River travel after Robert Fulton’s North River Steamboat (later referred to as Clermont) traveled from New York City to Albany in 1807 in a record 32 hours.

Local Historian Mark Peckham, a trustee of the Hudson River Maritime Museum, will share information on the fascinating history of the steamboats that navigated the Hudson River during the 19th and mid-20th centuries.

If you wish to attend, please register by clicking on the calendar at the library web site or call the information desk at 518-810-0314.

Thursday, October 17
Underground Railroad Education Center Paul Stewart, co-founder of the Underground Railroad Museum in Albany, will share the voices and experiences of the abolitionists and freedom seekers from slavery who passed through Albany on their way to liberty via the Underground Railroad. The “railroad” was a network of people providing assistance to fugitives from slavery in the early and mid-19th century prior to the Civil War (1861-1865). These fugitives were assisted by free blacks, whites, church people, and political abolitionists, as they journeyed to freedom by traveling through New York State to Canada. They often passed through Albany to Buffalo (and then on to Canada), while others chose an eastern route into Vermont and along the Champlain Canal.

Thursday, October 24
Eileen Mack – Voice of the Mountains Join us for an early evening of music and story-telling by Eileen Mack, who will bring us her interpretive show called, Voice of the Mountains. After discovering Jean Robert Foster’s book, Adirondack Portraits: A Piece of Time and Neighbors of Yesterday, Eileen was inspired to put together a one woman show in which she portrays the multi-faceted Adirondack-born writer, Gibson Girl and Harrison Fisher fashion model, journalist, editor, poet, and pioneer social worker. Dressing in period costume, Eileen weaves the stories of the Jeanne’s life and her Adirondack neighbors of yesterday into a mesmerizing journey back in time through stories, readings, and song.

Friday, November 1
The Cliff Brucker Jazz Ensemble Regionally renowned musician Cliff Brucker, will bring his ensemble to the Pruyn House for an early evening of sweet jazz. The quintessential performer, Cliff has played with Aretha Franklin, Buddy Greco, Rex Richardson, Bob Mintzer, Ray Vega, Claudio Roditi, Sandy Hackett’s Rat Pack and more. With his orchestra and ensembles, Cliff has performed all over New York State and the East Coast. You don’t have to be a jazz-snob to enjoy this evening’s performance, so circle the date on your calendar so you don’t miss Cliff Brucker and his ensemble.
