Underground Railroad Education Center Paul Stewart, co-founder of the Underground Railroad Museum in Albany, will share the voices and experiences of the abolitionists and freedom seekers from slavery who passed through Albany on their way to liberty via the Underground Railroad. The “railroad” was a network of people providing assistance to fugitives from slavery in the early and mid-19th century prior to the Civil War (1861-1865). These fugitives were assisted by free blacks, whites, church people, and political abolitionists, as they journeyed to freedom by traveling through New York State to Canada. They often passed through Albany to Buffalo (and then on to Canada), while others chose an eastern route into Vermont and along the Champlain Canal.
