Tuesday Concert presents "No Bow Tie"
Oct 29, Lawrence Arts Center, 7-8:15ish, FREE (tip jar)

I've SO been looking forward to this concert. Start with stellar guitar skills, add... ummm... unusual arrangements of classical music, and you start to get the idea. The last time they played in the series they got a standing ovation, and for good reason. Here is how John Svoboda describes the band: "Join us for a fun evening of Musical Blasphemy as we laugh with Mozart, reggae with Beethoven, and break every rule in the book of classical music. A good time for all!"

The remainder of the season looks great too.
Nov 12 – Sally and The Hurts - (Contemporary & original folk)

Nov 19 – Jeannie & Tal - (Contemporary & traditional folk. Yep, I'm finally scheduling my own 4-piece band.)

Dec 10th – Ingevalds Spelmän - (Scandinavian folk music)

The schedule is somewhat erratic due to other events at the Lawrence Arts Center, so I encourage you to join the Tuesday Concert page to receive event announcements, or check the website, www.TuesdayConcert.com, for reminders.

TONIGHT - Tuesday Concert presents The Lost Keys
Oct 1st, Lawrence Arts Center, 7:00-8:30, FREE (tip jar)

WOOHOO. I am excited to announce that Tricia Spencer and Howard Rains (Spencer & Rains) are bringing in their kids for a whole band experience at their Tuesday Concert performance. If you have attended the Kansas Fiddling & Picking Championships recently, you know the extent to which this family has dominated the competition. Tricia has won the Open Fiddle Division more times than anyone in my memory, including being the reigning Kansas Fiddle Champ, and Isaiah has recently won both the Open Fiddle Division and the Flatpick Guitar Division. AND, this year the Lost Keys won the band competition, which I suppose means they are the top acoustic band in the whole state. This is going to be a great concert of energetic old-time music. Don’t miss it.

AND - the rest of the fall season looks fantastic as well.

Oct 15 - Bryan Hicks (Jazz standards) and Carswell & Hope (Vintage rock sounds and sensibilities together with big harmonies, carefully crafted textures and inventive songwriting)

Tuesday Concert presents Byron James and Megafauna
7:00-8:30, Sept 17, Lawrence Arts Center, FREE (tip jar)

This is going to be fun - a concert that starts with solo classical guitar and ends with jazz/folk/classical-influenced spontaneous string compositions. Byron James is well-known as a singer/songwriter and with his band "Sugarfoot Detour," but you might not know he studied classical guitar in college. Megafauna is an improvisational band that features Andrew Frederic, guitar; Clyff Hoitt-Lange, viola; Tim O’Brien, acoustic bass; and Maya Weil, violin. They describe their music by saying it “celebrates the contributions of large mammals of the Pleistocene era that lived in Kansas.”

Last Night's Fun
The fall Tuesday Concert Series commenced with Woman Songwriters Night. My thanks to Ardys Ramberg, Megan Luttrell, Holly Taylor & Kimberly Storme, Harris & Frydman, Jeannie & Tal, Bianca & Benton, and Mary Conn Trio for donating time and talent to this fundraiser for the Lawrence Arts Center.

This is our way of showing our appreciation for the Art Center's support for local acoustic musicians by allowing me to use their space to host my series. The audience very generously donated almost $600 (before expenses) to show their support for keeping this local music series going. THANK YOU one and all for this terrific evening of music composed by our favorite woman songwriters.

Tuesday Concert presents Bob Freeman / Musician and Ellie LeBar
Lawrence Arts Center, May 28, 7:00-8:15ish, Free (tip jar)

The FINAL SHOW of the spring season of the Tuesday Concert Series is next week, and it will be terrific. Bob Freeman is highly respected in this area as an experienced singer/songwriter and performer. Ellie LeBar is an up-and-coming singer/songwriter whose voice, songs and stage presence will knock your socks off. Both of them submitted self-descriptions that I can’t improve on, so I’m just going to let them speak for themselves.

Ellie Lebar:
Ellie is a folk singer/songwriter, born and raised in LFK. She is currently pursuing a degree in music and songwriting at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. For the Tuesday Concert Series, Ellie will be performing several of her original songs; stories she wrote throughout her teens in Lawrence and young adulthood while attending college. The Lawrence native will accompany herself on acoustic guitar. This performance will be a soft and dreamy set, fit for a quiet, summer evening in beautiful Lawrence.

Bob Freeman:
Though I started playing 6-string guitar early on, I grew up with a strong desire to play bass. My first band was in 5th grade. I graduated from hometown garage bands to basically heaven-on-earth for bass players - an 8-piece band with horn sections in Wichita during the funk/disco years (1975-80). I moved to Lawrence in '84 and began a journey of playing bass with a variety of local musicians/ bands, setting up at house parties, local venues, Megga-Keggers, etc. Lawrence provided such a wonderful opportunity to grow musically, including a short stint working on another band's project in NYC in '93. Along the way, I played acoustic guitar on the side as a solo/duo/trio artist. After decades of band life ("the dysfunctional family you choose") I took a break and went all-in on acoustic performance. It's been a good fit for both my lifestyle and my personal growth. Going from being required to perform the Top 20 hits to sharing music that I feel is important gave new meaning to it all. Years back I was performing one of the usual standards at a bar and, mid-song, I began to think “what am I doing up here?" I literally looked down at my guitar, at the crowd, and wondered “what is all of this?” I kept playing, but it was all automatic. That's when I realized that I was no longer a musician. I was a cliche'. So, I made some changes and lost some gigs and folks, but over time it seems to have paid off. I'm happier. And I've got some wonderful musicians that have decided to join me when I venture out. And in these latter years, booking places like KC or Manhattan is less attractive, which is why getting an offer to play twice a month (2nd & 4th Fridays) locally at Black Stag Brewery was an easy "you bet." It's my retirement gig, with an occasional Northside Social booking. Lawrence's music community has been good to me, very forgiving. This seasoned, cantankerous 'ol picker is pretty lucky to still get a few gigs. But, if anyone is needing a bass player.....

TUESDAY NIGHT
Tuesday Concert Series presents Melvin Litton & Dan Hermreck
May 7, Lawrence Arts Center, 7:00-8:15ish, Free (tip jar)

Popularly known as the Gothic Cowboy and Mando Dan, this duo is one of the staples of the Lawrence acoustic music scene. Melvin is well known as producer and player with Dan at The Gothic Cowboy Review at Northside Social. He has seven albums to his credit, both as leader of the Border Band and as a duo with Dan. Melvin is also an accomplished author of six novels, including his recent King Harvest Trilogy, available at Raven Bookstore. Dan has also been performing for a number of years, partnering not only with Melvin but also with Bob Freeman and others. This is one of my favorite duos, and attendance is highly recommended.

After this performance, we take three weeks off due to other events at the Lawrence Arts Center. Our final show of the spring season is on May 28th with singer/songwriters Bob Freeman and Ellie LeBar.

April 16th - Tuesday Concert Series presents
Jenna Rae and Greg Pelligreen
Lawrence Arts Center - 7:00-8:15ish Free (tip jar)

This evening marks a new tradition for this series - inviting two separate performers to split the evening. Jenna and Greg are both highly respected musicians, each drawing from slightly different genres.

Jenna Rae's style lies somewhere between country and bluegrass. She has released 4 albums. 2 albums under “Jenna Rae” one album with her husband “Jenna & Martin”, and an album with her bluegrass band “Unfit Wives”.

Greg is well known in Lawrence as a teacher, singer/songwriter, and musician. Some say "Mr Harmonica." He is the "G" in Easy G and the Blue Notes and is frequently seen around town sitting in with a variety of bands.

After tonight, we take several weeks off due to other events at the Lawrence Arts Center, coming back on May 7th with one of my favorite duos - Melvin Litton & Dan Hermreck performing originals & Americana. Then it's several more weeks off before our final show, May 28th asEllie LeBar and Bob Freeman perform their originals & Americana. Check the website, www.Tuesday Concert.com for details.
