The beautiful, historic building that once housed Lebanon’s Middle & High School has a new art space open to the public. Two former classrooms have been renovated into Lebanon's own coffee house, School Grounds Coffee.
This is a space for students to safely congregate after school hours, but School Grounds is not just a space for the youth of the community. With a private space for meetings and free high speed internet, we hope local business leaders will drop by for a light lunch with a colleague or a change of scenery to catch up on email or research their latest project. Mornings and afternoons allow young parents to enjoy sipping a cappuccino or a fresh fruit smoothie while their toddlers color or make a craft project. Evenings will soon bring an added option for date nights or a gathering spot for friends with special events such as game nights, trivia, karaoke, and live music. This blending of ages, arts, and activities makes School Grounds Coffee a welcome addition to the community landscape as a “third place”. That’s “Great and Good” for everyone!
The term “third place” comes from the book The Great Good Place: Cafes, Coffee Shops, Community Centers, Beauty Parlors, General Stores, Bars, Hangouts and How They Get You Through the Day, by author Ray Oldenburg. In Great Good Place, Mr. Oldenburg espouses the need we all have for places, apart from home and work, to gather and connect with others as a buffer against the stress in our lives. Having a place to destress is especially relevant during these trying times, and studies show that de-stressing actually makes us healthier. In fact, he indicates that part of the charm of small towns is the health and nostalgia of the unique hangouts they provide.
We are blessed in Lebanon to have so many great good places to gather! So, why is another community space important and what does coffee have to do with art?
