🖼🎨Featured Artist of the Month! 🎨🖼
This month we are happy to be featuring local teen artists. They enjoyed a day out at our coffee shop to see their work displayed on our walls.
The projects displayed were designed and created by Marion County High School Graphic Design students. The Graphic Design pathway includes four different classes that students can take throughout their time at Marion County. Our school/program has the capability to design and create different pieces for the community as well as...small businesses, churches, civic organizations, individuals...we can help you! If you’re interested in having our students create pieces or designs for you, email [email protected].

Say hello to our February featured artist Jennifer Marye!
Jennifer Marye has two hobbies she loves: canvas paintings and hand embroidery hoop art. They
are both part of her self-care she attempts to do every night as she winds down from the day. “I
have always loved beautiful art and going to museums since I was a child” she indicated when asked
what drew her interest to the hobbies. She began her journey in the arts when she was six years old with drawing and painting. “I learned to draw by looking at a magazine and drawing what is in the magazine. I would draw a picture and then color it using colored pencils or crayons. I tried my hand at painting which is an easier medium to use because it is more forgiving. You can correct paintings by just painting over it and starting over” she said. With 38 years of experience, Jennifer’s preferred medium when it comes to painting is acrylic paint on canvas, but she also paints on wood as well.
Jennifer considers herself not only an expert painter but also skilled in hand embroidery. She has been embroidering for the past 10 years, having first learned the craft through cross-stitching
patterns as a child. Her mother would purchase a cross-stitch pattern, start it, and then pass it on to Jennifer for her to complete. Nowadays, Jennifer works with thread on cotton or canvas and manages each project from start to finish. When asked which project takes the most time to complete,
Jennifer mentioned embroidering houses. The process begins with a photograph of a person’s house, which she uses as a guide for her embroidery. “These projects require a lot of time because I want to ensure that every stitch that I make is necessary to accurately recreate the person’s house,” she said. Additionally, she has taught her children some of her painting and embroidery skills, hoping they will enjoy these activities as much as she does. "I feel blessed to have a talent and want to share it with others." she said. When asked for advice on learning a hobby or craft, she responded,
“Practice makes perfect. If it is something you desire to learn do not give up on learning. Also
remember beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Just because your art does not look like some‐one else’s does not mean it is not art.” Jennifer has found financial success through her passion. She is hired to paint and create artwork, selling many of her pieces each year at the Christmas Arts & Crafts Fair in Louisville, KY. “I enjoy bringing a smile to people’s face when they see my art.” she added.
Not only does she attend this event every year, but she also takes orders throughout the year and offers free monogramming on customized orders. You can find her work on her page,
“All Things Crafty by Jeni”. Those wishing to purchase items can send her a Facebook message,
email her at [email protected] or reach her at 859-319-5944. Her prices range anywhere from $25 - $80 depending on difficulty and size. •

The beautiful, historic building that once housed Lebanon’s Middle & High School has a new art space open to the public. Two former classrooms have been renovated into Lebanon's own coffee house, School Grounds Coffee.
This is a space for students to safely congregate after school hours, but School Grounds is not just a space for the youth of the community. With a private space for meetings and free high speed internet, we hope local business leaders will drop by for a light lunch with a colleague or a change of scenery to catch up on email or research their latest project. Mornings and afternoons allow young parents to enjoy sipping a cappuccino or a fresh fruit smoothie while their toddlers color or make a craft project. Evenings will soon bring an added option for date nights or a gathering spot for friends with special events such as game nights, trivia, karaoke, and live music. This blending of ages, arts, and activities makes School Grounds Coffee a welcome addition to the community landscape as a “third place”. That’s “Great and Good” for everyone!
The term “third place” comes from the book The Great Good Place: Cafes, Coffee Shops, Community Centers, Beauty Parlors, General Stores, Bars, Hangouts and How They Get You Through the Day, by author Ray Oldenburg. In Great Good Place, Mr. Oldenburg espouses the need we all have for places, apart from home and work, to gather and connect with others as a buffer against the stress in our lives. Having a place to destress is especially relevant during these trying times, and studies show that de-stressing actually makes us healthier. In fact, he indicates that part of the charm of small towns is the health and nostalgia of the unique hangouts they provide.
We are blessed in Lebanon to have so many great good places to gather! So, why is another community space important and what does coffee have to do with art?
Well, there is the art of coffee bean roasting which Gregg Potter of Potter Coffee (Yes! We will be serving Lebanon’s own Potter Coffee!) has been perfecting for several years, the art of latte crema which our baristas hope to some day master, and the local art which will hang on the walls of School Grounds to showcase our community artists and Marion County student’s artistic creations.
However, the “Art of Coffee” has a much more grounding significance. Whether or not you partake of coffee in the shop, call in a take-out order, or come by to just soak in the atmosphere and eat a piece of cheesecake, there is an artistic sense of coziness surrounding coffee that can’t be defined by words... you just have to experience it.
Art, whether it be visual or performing art, needs a place of reflection to solidify it in our souls. So also does life need such connection. A coffee shop lends itself to reflection and conversation; it’s a place for the blending art and community into our lives. Welcome to School Grounds Coffee, Lebanon’s Own Coffee House.
