Synopsis:
We all know the story of the baby Jesus’ arrival. We
know it very well. So how is this story told in a new
way? WORD ON THE STREET focuses on the
couple: Mary and Joseph. God knew what he was
doing when he chose these two ordinary and
humble people. But what was it like for them? How
did they follow God’s path for them when confronted
with such a miracle—a baby born to a virgin!?
Jesus comes to ordinary people like us, people
willing to follow but with their own self doubts and
fears. Mary wondering, how she can do this? A
baby? Joseph wondering, am I the right guy for
this?
Word on the Street is set in Modern Day and has a very contemporary vibe.
Character Descriptions:
MARY: Authentic, loving and humble. Mid 20’s. A sensitive woman who deeply
loves God. And loves Joseph and depends on him. Mary is a friend to
everyone, an everyday girl that embodies innocence and soulfulness
JOSEPH: Mid 30’s, graffiti artist, caretaker. An open hearted kind of guy.
Warm, quiet, honest. Loves Mary. Mary brings laughter and joy into his world.
Faithful to God.
ANGEL: The angel, full of infectious enthusiasm, could not be more thrilled by
his assignment. Tells it like it is. Persistent and excited about this baby idea and
what it could mean for the world. Knows and understands God’s love for this
world and just wishes these humans would understand too.
AUNT LIZ: An 84-year-old woman who has a great sense of humor and a
youthful spirit. Confident in her own skin, laughs easily. Possesses a deep and
soulful confidence in God. Like a mother to Mary.
UNCLE ZACH: A feisty older gentleman about 86 years old. Lost his voice for
standing up to the angel. Loves his wife and is keen on being the jokester.
WOMAN: Easy going, everyday person. The every-woman. Narrator of sorts,
but mainly a guide to the audience. Offering insight along the way. Hangs out
and comments on the action. A friend to the audience. Important to speak in an
every day style like talking to a friend, rather than an authority on the story.
ENSEMBLE: The ensemble is key to creating the environment and world of the
play. Ideally the ensemble is a combination of actors and singers creating the
world together. Each ensemble member has an activity and a role within the
play: street singer, flower girl, papergirl, street dancer, street musician, and
jewelry seller. They change roles throughout. Sometimes they are Mary’s best
friends, sometimes they are strangers, sometimes they are dancers, sometimes
they are just hanging out in the background, not involved. Their stations are
places on stage where they are parked, so to speak. In between the action of
the play, the ensemble members go back to their stations, quietly doing their
activities . This helps to create the backdrop for the main scene.
