When planning an event, there are many choices you can make to be more sustainable. Here are some tips to help you cut down on food waste and make a positive impact:

🍝 Reduce the volume of food ordered
Consider the true number of attendees and estimate accurately how much food they will consume. Instead of ordering excess "just in case," order only what is needed. This simple step can significantly reduce food waste!

💚 Donate extra food items
What should you do with leftover food after the event? Donate it! Give it to attendees as they leave, or find a nearby shelter or donation center that accepts ready-made meals. This not only prevents waste but also supports the community.

🪴 Compost
If you still have food left after ordering carefully and donating, compost it! Instead of sending it to a landfill, ask the venue if they offer composting options. If not, consider finding a venue that does or partner with a composting service for after the event.

📊 Collect Data/Results
After the event, track how much food was ordered versus how much was left over. These insights will be invaluable for planning future events and minimizing waste even further. If you find there was still too much food, adjust your ordering for next time!

While recently dining out in York, ME, I noticed something concerning—pre-filling water glasses for reserved tables 💧 When the reservation canceled, the water was dumped and new glasses were filled for walk-ins. This small habit can lead to significant water waste!

A simple change like asking guests if they’d like water, instead of pre-filling, can help reduce waste and make your establishment more sustainable 🌎 It’s the little adjustments that can have a big impact!

Looking to host an event? Work with your venue and leverage their connections with local businesses. Let them handle the heavy lifting 💪 When buying locally, remember not to over-purchase to avoid waste. If you do have extra food, see if it can be donated to a local shelter under the Good Samaritan Law, as long as it hasn’t been served. Alternatively, consider composting any leftovers to reduce landfill waste.
