Sumiyo was born in Kyoto, Japan during September 1973. She graduated MFA in Painting from Savannah College of Art and Design in 1998. Her works have been published in several magazines and newspapers and been featured on local television.

New England seasonal landscapes are the inspiration for Sumiyo's watercolor works. She expresses her daily experience through watercolor, sumi ink, and oil paint.

“An uncle got me involved in making birdhouses. He asked me to make some big ones for him that were unusual in design. Someone driving past his home saw them and stopped my uncle, who was outdoors, to ask them where he got them.

I began learning more about birdhouses by talking with some bird lovers who gave me tips. One of the big things was to make them so that they could get into them and clean them out once a bird family had left.” — Eric Kalwarczyk

He started by simply using pine to construct bird-houses that are straightforward in design just as you would find in a classic garden though he prefers to make them on the whimsical side like his crooked birdhouses, some of which are stacked three upon one another, or his sway back bard birdhouses which he considers “great for a country garden.”

“Each unique basket starts with a hand- built clay base incorporating real leaf impressions or pressed fabric patterns to create and highlight textures and shapes. The basketry is attached through holes in the rim of the pottery piece and woven with natural or dyed reed using a wicker work technique that I have developed over the last 30 years. The baskets are often embellished with materials such as leather, copper, glass beads, feathers or other unusual finding. Sizes range from 8" up to 42"...they cannot be duplicated!” — Lynne Puhalla

“A science background and love of the unusual lead Steven to collect many rare and unusual fossil specimens. When ever possible Steven visits Fossil quarries, mineral deposits, and mining operations. Together with Susan they have created a signature collection of jewelry, utilizing fossils in gold settings with diamonds and other precious gems. The " Ancient Visions " collection has won critical acclaim, been featured in national publications, and been exhibited at the NY State Museum. The collection is an ongoing, evolving project.

Both Steven and Susan are exploring the use of three-dimensional hollow constructed forms. The process, known as Hollow Shell construction, involves raising forms from flat sheet metal on stakes using hammers and joining the pieces with invisible seams to form hollow three dimensional shapes. This very meticulous, labor intensive method has lead to new designs previously unwearable as jewelry. The hollowed pieces are sculptural in nature and tend to transcend their small scale.”

While running his studio, Andy has also put in considerable effort to share all of what he has learned with the community. He gives workshops, provides classes and has created comprehensive video tutorials sharing his techniques. In March of 2023, Andy will even be giving a lecture at NCECA, which is the largest and most prestigious ceramics conference in the world. Andy believes that being a potter is one of the most difficult ways to make a living and desperately wants to make it easier for the next generation.
