It’s that time of year again! Tonight, in the Tom T. Hall, we’re hosting our annual faculty mixer! We’re all done with soundcheck and ready to go. It’s nice to see at least one of our students listened during the lecture about protecting your hearing… Great job Grit!

We’re gearing up for another semester and are excited to see all of our students in class! Because of the natural downtime in the summer combined with some fun Covid restrictions, some of our gear has been “resting” for a good amount of time… So, we spent time today firing up equipment and making sure everything is ready for next week!

Hey everyone! We have really exciting news and we need your help. Things in the entertainment world are really starting to come back to life. Bands are scheduling tours, theaters are opening their doors, companies are hosting events and theme parks are lifting restrictions. What does this mean for us? They're in desperate need of audio techs!! The pandemic forced a lot of us to pivot into new careers and that has caused a giant staffing vacuum for many companies. Matt and I have been receiving calls and emails from all over the country asking if we have any qualified engineers looking for work...

This morning we had the honor of running sound for the SPC Law Enforcement Memorial Service. This ceremony honors all of the Texas law enforcement officers that passed away in the past year. All of their names are read followed by a 21 gun salute, bagpipes, and the raising of the flags. We are happy that we are able to help out with such an incredible event!

Pro Tip - Have your compressors ready to go BEFORE the 21 gun salute. 😉

In Systems Tech class we’ve been learning about rigging. Today we got the CM Chain Hoist out and learned all the ins and outs of how they work. I addition to the normal setup and operation, we looked at some internal features like setting the limits and some of the manual overrides. Rigging is always one of the highlights of the semester!

We’re excited to be hosting our first ever EDM festival at SPC tonight, in the Tom T. Hall! With the recent addition of our Electronic Music Program, students are now able create and perform EDM as part of their curriculum! The live sound students set up a “booth fill” on stage for the performers. System Optimization students tuned the fill using SMAART and processed it with a Meyer Sound Galileo 816.

Immersive audio is something we introduce the students to while at SPC. Today, the System Design & Installation class was learning how to setup and operate Meyer Sound’s Spacemap Go. This is their spacial sound design and mixing tool. Creating an immersive surround sound mix with your finger on an iPad is always fun for the students to experience!! Students learn to design and physically setup the equipment as well as operate the system to creat an immersive mix.

Top Rock killed it tonight with a great performance! Our Live Sound students worked very hard behind the scenes to make the show happen and I’m very proud of them. I hope everyone has a great spring break and I look forward to seeing you all when you get back!

Notes:
-Nobody was at the mixer turning the mic up and down.
-We were approaching limit on the sub without any feedback.
-The paper was just to demonstrate how loud the sub is and how much air it is moving.

We’re excited about the new Meyer Sound Ultra-X20! These recently arrived and are really impressive. With two 5” cone drivers and a 2” HF driver mounted to a rotatable horn, this little box is really impressive. Pictured below is an X20 on the left with a UPM on the right for a size comparison. We took a measurement in SMAART, on axis at about 3’ from the speaker. We also wanted to show you the inside without the grill. The aluminum enclosure keeps the weight down to 27lbs.

Covid has presented us with many challenges at the College... Especially when our programs are focused on doing concerts for large groups of people... 🤷‍♂️. So, we’re mixing things up this semester, and moving some shows outside. It was a great opportunity for our Audio, Video and Music programs to come together and put on a great performance! Our students did a great job! Here's a 7 hour day condensed to 1:20 seconds... Enjoy!

Well, after many years of faithful service, the Avid Profile’s Mix Rack decided to have problems. We think one of the power supplies caught COVID but we can’t be sure until the tests come back... In the mean time, we removed about a 1,000 screws (thanks Digidesign engineers...) and removed one of the redundant power supplies. Hopefully the good one keeps working until we can get the new one here!
