Today, Carnegie Hall in Lewisburg welcomed third and fourth grade students from across Greenbrier County for two lively performances of "The Pantomime Man" with Dan Kamin, part of the ongoing Spotlight on Schools series.

Nine elementary schools—Alderson, Crichton, Frankford, Lewisburg, Rainelle, Ronceverte, Rupert, Smoot, and White Sulphur Springs—attended the shows!

Dan Kamin’s performance transformed the stage into a playful, interactive space where students became part of the show. Through pantomime, illusion, and imaginative movement, Kamin demonstrated how live theatre thrives on audience participation. Children blew him off the stage, beat him in tug-of-war with invisible ropes, and became the “soundtrack” of the performance—learning that theatre is a conversation, not just a presentation.

By guiding students through pantomime techniques and inviting them to observe closely, Kamin helped them discover the rhythm of theatrical give-and-take and the joy of pretending—something they already do so well.

Carnegie Hall’s Spotlight on Schools series introduces a new performance medium each year, offering students unique opportunities to experience the power of live performance. The program brings inspiring artists, musicians, and performers to southeastern West Virginia, expanding students’ understanding of the world beyond their classrooms.

🎶 Lewisburg's Hidden Gem: The History of Carnegie Hall, WV! 🏛️

Did you know that our beautiful Carnegie Hall in Lewisburg, WV, is one of only four Carnegie Halls in the world still in continuous use as a performing arts center? The others are in New York, Pittsburgh, and Scotland! Talk about a unique piece of history right here in the mountains!

1902 Start: Philanthropist Andrew Carnegie donated funds to build this gorgeous Greek Revival-style structure for the Lewisburg Female Institute (later Greenbrier College for Women). It served as a vital classroom and auditorium space.

The Save: After the college closed in 1972, the building was later rumored to be condemned! Thankfully, a passionate group of citizens formed Carnegie Hall, Inc. in 1983 to save and restore it.

Today's Mission: Since then, it has been a regional center for arts and education, bringing world-class performances, art exhibits (including the WV Music Hall of Fame exhibit!), classes, and workshops to our community.

This landmark truly symbolizes the power of community dedication to the arts and preservation. Next time you pass by, remember the amazing journey this historic building has taken!
