We are calling this one "On Stage"

This commission is a theater themed Western shirt and skirt. The client wanted a theater theme, but without using the regular symbol of the two masks. They also wanted to include bunnies and plants. So we used subtle symbolism from various productions. Can you guess which ones? We'll give you one hint. If you look closely, you'll see that the roses have been painted red 😁. Another highlight is the ticket trim that borders all around the hand embroidered art. We couldn't find anything out there like it so we had to figure out how to make it from scratch. This ensemble took a grand total of 271 hours to complete.

The Garden Jacket

This jacket was completely hand embroidered, tailored, and sewn in 298 hours, divided into 37 days of straight work to finish it on time. It is made from a 100% linen, and lined with a fun forest green hummingbird lining. The client loves to garden and put fun finds in her pockets. The muddy dog prints represent her fur babies whilst the rabbit on the back symbolizes her children. The sleeves are intended to be worn flipped up as a 3/4 sleeve, but they are finished in a way that they can be flipped down if desired. Lastly, to add some subtle sparkle, we decided to make raindrops with clear beads.

Overall, we are so pleased with how this commission turned out. We hope you all enjoyed following along in our stories as we progressed.

We are back after taking a much needed break. Today I am sharing the last of our Renaissance Faire Commissions. These pieces are a matching set of pirate costumes for some of our long time clients. The coat, stays, and pants were upcycled from some brocade curtains that were donated by some of their best friends. The velvet trim and faux silks were also pieces from our stash. There are functional pockets in both costumes, and the stomacher for the stays is reversible. We are very pleased with how both of these turned out!

This jester costume was another cool custom commission that we made for attending the Renaissance festival. It consists of a hat, collar and skirt made from a black cotton fabric and silver bells. You can hear this costume coming before you see it! I am proud of this one as I drafted the pattern myself, and it's surprisingly cute despite it's simplicity.

Another Ren Faire commission we created was this set of wizard robes which included a robe, cape, hat, and belt. The client requested that the ensemble be made with a similar silhouette to Gandalf the Grey but with the colors of the character Garrett from the Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog. This outfit took over 20 yards of fabric to make, so we tried to find something that was light and breathable. We ended up going with a lightweight faux linen that was 100% cotton. Is has a lovely body and a good drape which made it great fun to take pictures with!

It has been awhile since we have posted anything (we have been really busy!). But we are going to start sharing all of the commissions we made for this year's Tennessee Renaissance Festival. Starting off with our Resident Captain Jack Sparrow, he needed a new vest and pants for his many days at the fair. The vest is made from a Japanese cotton that we distressed using lemon juice and the sun to fade it as well as some mild sanding along the seams and edges. The buttons are a reproduction from the Pirates of the Caribbean films and the pockets are functional to store any compasses or secrets treasures. The back is made from a 18th century reprint ticking. We also made authentic hand sewn eyelets for the back cinch.

The pants are my favorite. They started out as a blue linen/cotton. We did a mild bleach rinse, which turned the fabric brownish. Then we did multiple rounds of lemon juice in the sun to get the faded brown-grey color. The pants also feature the reproduction buttons, functional pockets and drop front style fly. Not pictured is a back cinch on the back waistband that allows for fit adjustment. It was a pleasure working with Captain Jack.

A happy Good Friday for all of those who celebrate! We are starting off this Easter Weekend by releasing a new YouTube video of how we made this 1861 Ball Gown. We hope everyone has a wonderful and safe Easter.

This is a video of how I hand sewed this 1861 ball gown in 16 days. This video includes how I drafted the pattern from Patterns of Fashion 2 by Janet Arnold,...

A coat we made for a friend. This coat was made from a lightweight wool/acrylic blend, flatlined with a cotton flannel for extra warmth, and lined with a honey colored satin. It is half canvased to keep the structure in the lapels and collar. We practiced some tailoring techniques with a fancy wool felt under collar, and sleeve headers. There are pockets hidden in the middle front seams and eyelets in the back to cinch in the waist. Finished just in time for the weather to warm up 😂.

We are back safe and sound from our birthday trip. We went to visit the Biltmore again with our friends. The rain put a bit of a damper on our photoshoot, but we still had a good time. We wore 1920s dresses made from an antique pattern from the time. They are essentially the same dress, just styled assembled differently and with different fabrics.

Photos are in from the Alice by Heart play we made many costumes for. I just love how they turned out. It's always such a joy getting photos back from projects you worked on. Plus, the costumes always look better on the actors they were made for! From the photos, it looks like the nailed it!

Our latest commission was a whopping 19 pieces created for a play called 'Alice by Heart'. This version of Alice in Wonderland is set in a 1940s World War II bunker. We created the bulk of the King and Queen of hearts costumes, as well as the four suit cards, and Alice herself. It was fun exploring 1940s medical uniforms, and we couldn't be more tickled with how the syringe crowns turned out!

We couldn't leave the youngest member of our costume group out Dickens of a Christmas, so Summer and I tag teamed this child's coat. It is based off of a museum piece from 1885-1902. This one is made from a wool acrylic blend and lined with a polyester satin. All edges don a matching piping, and the front frogs were harvested from a vintage 1980s/1990s jacket that was in disrepair. The coat was large enough for warm winter clothes underneath, and relatively easy to take on and off when needed.

Are you tired of seeing stuff from Dickens of a Christmas yet? 😂 This is the second of the two dresses we made the girls this year. This one was based off of several adult dresses I found on Pinterest. In the 1840s most girls were dressed almost identically to adult women, with the exception of having a shorter skirt. We always make the kids dresses with longer hemlines so they can be worn for longer. This dress is made from a faux silk, has functional pockets, and fastens in the back with hooks and eyes. My favorite part of the dress is actually the sleeve bells. I used tubes of bias cut fabric to mold the wavy chain pattern around the bicep. For those of you who attended our sewing demo at the Marshall County Art Guild this December, this is the final outcome of the dress we were working on.

Happy New Year everyone! Starting off the year with yet another Dickens outfit. This is a girl's 1840s dress made from faux silk and lined with a fun monkey print cotton. It has a lovely pleated bodice, inspired by the extant dress in the second to last photo. It also contains hidden side seam pockets for holding snacks 😉. It was pretty cold at Dickens this year, so the girls had to wear their capes most of the time. Hopefully they can wear their dresses again next year.

An 1840s outfit we made for our mom for this year's Dickens of a Christmas.. A matching fan-front dress, fur trimmed cape, m**f, and a bonnet made in the same satin as the piping on the dress. I am not sure of the fabric content since it was a bolt from our stash that someone had given us, but it has a nice twill pattern close up. Of course the dress has functional pockets! Not pictured is the corset underneath. I need to get an individual picture of that sometime.

Another one of the commissions we made for december was this 1861 ball gown. This ball gown is made of a faux silk taffeta and lined with a polished cotton. The color is actually more of an emerald or peacock green but shows up as more of an aqua in pictures (see last picture for a better color comparison). The gown is actually a separate bodice and skirt, with hooks sewn into the waistband to keep things in place while dancing. The skirt is cartridge pleated at the waist and of course it has pockets! The main feature of this gown however is the copious amounts of self fabric ruffles. There are 12 yards of ruffles on the bodice and 24 yards of ruffles on skirt. That's 64 yards hemming that had to be done on this gown! It was worth it though, to see the beaming face of our client when she tried it on for the first time. It never gets old!

Another new commission for Dickens of a Christmas was this green velvet coat and gold vest. The coat was inspired by the frock coats and jackets seen anywhere from the 1820s to the 1840s. It features black velvet contrasts and embroidery details to reinforce the stress points. The pockets are functional on both garments. But my favorite is the blue/ brown two-toned lining in the jacket.

I am going to finally start catching up on some of the costumes we have been making over the last few months in preparation for Dickens. A lot of the time out clients want their new pieces to be a surprise, so we have to hold off for a bit.

First up is a bright red velvet Dickens style coat. It is decorated with contrasting black velvet buttons and wool felt collar and pocket flaps. The pockets are functional and and large enough to accommodate most smart phones. It is lining is a dark silver/grey paisley print. Best part about this coat is you can spot your friend in a crowd a mile away!
