Today's update. WE HAVE WATER!!!! The pump has been replaced, water is flowing up the mountain and we're so excited! Now that we have water we can assess the septic situation and repair pipes as needed. For now, won't you join us in a "water happy dance"? I hear "Boogie Shoes" playing and must dance.....

Trick-or-treaters are a few and far between up here on top of the mountain. 😉 So tonight’s Halloween celebration involves chicken taco soup in the crockpot, fresh rosemary/olive oil bread, and a movie marathon that includes at least Hocus-Pocus and Practical Magic. Short update. We have officially closed the retreat for the season and have been “putting it to bed for the winter“. We would’ve been wrapping up the fall gathering right now and all of us are really missing our favorite way to wrap up a season. However, we’ve been extremely lucky here. All our staff are safe and most have electricity and water again. We have electricity at the retreat and are hoping water and septic will be back soon. Know that we are thinking about you and wishing you could be with us to see these beautiful fall views. More updates as things continue to improve.

On a last note, this spider wove her beautiful web on Wednesday before the storm even hit. Every morning when I get up and see her hanging out here I am reminded of how she rebuilt her home immediately after Hurricane Helene passed. Wildacres and WNC both have the same resiliency.

We took the first photo yesterday on Wildacres Road where it connects with 226A and where the old chimney used to stand. Craig is standing where the chimney used to be. The second photo is facing 226A. You can see a red pick up truck parked near our sign. Those trees were washed down the mountain from the Parkway/Gooch gap! The third photo is what the cleanup crews managed to do overnight!

Hurricane Helene has hit WNC hard. Wildacres Retreat is closed for the remainder of 2024 as we attempt to dig out. Roads to the retreat are impassable and the retreat has no water, sewer or power. Thank you to everyone who has reached out to tell us we are in your thoughts. For now, all staff are safe and focusing on getting life back on track. We will keep you posted on how recovery goes. For now, keep us in mind and check on anyone else you know in WNC to be sure they're safe.

Our hearts are sore and there's a Harley-shaped hole in our days now. We said "goodbye" to Harleydog today. While we'll miss him more than words can express, we knew it was time and he knew it too. He is no longer in pain or confused. Instead, somewhere Harley is doing zoomies with a big old doggy grin, getting ALL the bacon instead of a couple of measly little pieces and hogging the bed like a pro. He was "the man".
