This year sold seeds from their incredible dahlia patch. Her double petals lead me to think she’s a daughter of Dahlia “Floret”. Did you know that every seed harvested from a dahlia creates a brand new variety? What should we name this one?

Our hot climate is certainly not the pristine growing environment for them but I’m determined to find a way. In the meantime, each and every stem will be cherished, thanked, and praised.

Our fall crops are starting to bloom. We don’t have a full garden because of Hurricane Francine but there’s always something to be grateful for. Less crops means less work. Autumn is all about rest and shedding the old anyway. I seem to be continuously reminded of these innuendos by Mother Nature.

Our fall subscriptions are right around the corner. I can’t wait to share our beautiful stems with our subscribers!

Today I’m celebrating my THIRTY-SIXTH birthday!

My gosh, THIRTY-freaking-SIX!! 🤯 What a wild ride it has been, especially this last year.

It’s funny how one tiny seed sown can change the entire trajectory of your life. The ripples that come off of an action that small can awaken parts of you that you haven’t yet known. Learning to embrace the unknown is something that I have to actively practice daily. As each year passes, I realize that embracing the unknown and having the tenacity to follow your dreams, however crazy they are, is what makes getting older so special. The lessons that we learn when we embrace the scary things and use them as our fuel is invaluable.

Growing and sharing flowers with our community has been among the top five MOST incredible things in my life. I am so thankful for each and every one of you here. You all have given me the strength and the courage to move forward and embrace every moment through this journey.

SPRINGING🌷 into FALL🍂

I mean that literally…

We are pulling out some of our crops and replacing them with spring seedlings! It’s wild how soon we start to prepare for flowers that won’t bloom until six months from now but trust me when I say they ARE worth it.

Spring flowers are extra special, especially for us in the Deep South. Some farmers can grow these flowers later into the summer months but we are *cough* “blessed” with Louisiana summers which are, well, hotter than all get out. These flowers don’t vibe with Louisiana summers.

We are soaking up the last of our fall harvests before we compromise their spots for Spring goodies. This may be one of our favorite arrangements to date. ✨

LIMELIGHTS 💚

If you have a spot in your yard or landscaping that gets part sun (about 6 hours) please do yourself a favor and plant Limelight Hydranges. It’s the perfect time to plant perennials in our zone and this is a MUST HAVE.

They are deciduous so they’ll lose their leaves in the winter but in spring the plants sprout new growth and by July you’ll have the first blooms. The blooms are vivid white at first but if you let them age on the plant they sometimes fade to blush and then turn to lime.

You can cut them and place in water or you can dry them and use them for years to come. I just bought some more a few weeks ago from our friends at Double Oak Garden Center! Y’all stop in and stock up!

DAHLIA SPROUTS 🌱

The funny thing about gardening is the lack of control we actually have. I am such a control freak. It’s my ick or my “red flag”, undoubtedly. The biggest lesson that I’ve learned on this journey is that we have to stop fighting Mother Nature.

The amount of plants that I’ve killed in these three years while trying to fight Mother Nature, gosh. Although I can say that every single plant that I killed I learned something from, but damn. It still sucks. Part of those failures was stemmed from knowing what times of the year we are able to grow certain flowers, like DAHLIAS.

In cooler climates, dahlias grow during the Summer months. There’s not a chance that they would grow through Louisiana summers. It’s simply too hot. Dahlias like cooler weather… a perfect “Sunny and 75” kind of day.

As I watch our dahlias emerge from the soil of our new farm expansion I am reminded of two things:
-It’s Fall, y’all. Like, for real.
-Keep pushing pass the failures and maybe, just maybe, you’ll see the seeds of your labor emerge and thrive.

Dear Autumn,

We welcome you with open arms after a grueling Summer. Thank you for your shorter days, your cooler temperatures, and reminding us that all hard seasons do come to an end.

As we welcomed Autumn this week I couldn’t help but think of this very shoot. This is what happens when you bring together talented people with the same vision: Louisiana’s Golden Hour. We foraged wildflowers, combined them with our own, and came together cohesively with this talented group of vendors.
