A morning with Cache Valley artist Lance Williams: Witnessing the creative process is mesmerizing for me. The struggle, the vulnerability of putting oneself out there, the friction between being true to oneself while also pleasing clients. These are some of the topics we discuss as Lance ventures to add depth to a landscape painting with some clouds that transforms the image before my eyes. I truly believe Lance is in the process of becoming a household name in Cache Valley. It’s exciting to witness. And, yes you can buy his art.

I spent the month of April in Italy. I didn’t touch my camera the entire time. I believe a key to my long term success is sharpening the saw. When I spend time away from the craft I start to itch and it’s the fuel that keeps my engine moving. Protecting your passion is vital. Over work leads to burn out! This was a fun reception I did a week or so ago.

Yes, this is one of two images I have of myself from the summer of 1994. sent it to me today. When I was 16 my dad proactively looked for opportunities to send me away for work. He reached out to one of his best friends, Clint Andersen and arranged for me to work concrete for the summer. I left the first week of June with only $7 in my wallet believing that I needed to stretch that for two weeks until my first paycheck.
That summer I learned the power of positive thinking. Waking up at 4:30 in the morning looking forward to 12-13 hours of hard labor in 115 degrees is daunting. By the second month I trained myself to look forward to Mondays. It was pure survival. It was the greatest summer of my life. I learned to pray. I learned hard work and to appreciate a good shade tree and how to take a nap at stop lights. The best thing my parents ever did was let me explore at a young age. I think of it all the time to this day!

I took some portraits last night at my book club and at the end I handed the camera to a friend who took my portrait. It’s important that I become the subject sometimes because I disconnect from the feeling of being a deer in the head lights. It’s kind of strange having your picture taken isn’t it!?
