WOLFCHILD is coming to Lopez Center on January 25th!

This duo has been playing together since their earliest years and have performed on stages such as The Troubadour, Mississippi Studios, “The Egg” (Albany, NY), Folklore (UK), and Java (Paris). Together they weave cathartic storytelling with dynamic soundscapes, from dreamy shoegaze-esk weightless atmosphere, to meditative orchestral overtones, and a rhythmic cinematic sound that could be the love child of Jonsi (Sigur Ros) and Nick Drake.

Indoor concert with riser seating

In the modern musical landscape, it’s rare to hear something as put-together as Cascadian folk duo West My Friend - something so layered, deeply symphonic, baroque, and mysterious in its own winking way while still courting an edge of disaster. Simple is safe, but complex is fiery, intricate, and ultimately more rewarding.

Steeped in the visual styles of western Canada, West My Friend are veterans of the Victoria music scene and recently released their Independent Music Awards-nominated fourth album “In Constellation”. On this latest work, the band continues to refine the art of creating achingly poignant folk music, only this time, they’re backed by a full symphony orchestra, heavily layered while remaining lighthearted. Intricate yet accessible. Melancholic yet optimistic.

Mingling grassroots guitar, accordion, mandolin, orchestral instruments, and interweaving harmonies, In Constellation (produced by Joby Baker, co-produced and arranged by Adrian Dolan) features longtime members conceiving a new box, then thinking outside of it. Punctuated by musings on anxiety and belonging, song structures vary and dynamics change from moment to moment, painting powerful lyrical portraits over backgrounds of violins and trumpets that swell, collapse, and tumble between bold harmonies.

With over 750 performances and countless tours under their belt, West My Friend is bringing forth a new sound you’ve never known you’ve wanted and new meaning to the things you’ve never known you needed.

Acrobatic Conundrum presents the Circus of Second Chances at Lopez Center this weekend! Saturday at 7:30pm and again on Sunday at 2pm!
http://www.lopezcenter.org/goto.php?page=tickets&eid=2788

On a relentless quest for wonder, three veteran acrobats let their imaginations run wild to fulfill secret longings. Fluent in the language of circus, Acrobatic Conundrum's principal performers melt the fourth wall to reveal their fatal flaws and journeys to redemption. The audience plays a vital part in The Circus of Second Chances, in which ropes are dancescapes, trapezes are windows to the soul, and spinning hoops are portals to infinite possibility. In our homes we are out at sea, on our living room couch we find ourselves on an epic odyssey; so much rests upon the fate of a half-full bottle of ketchup lying unseen in the back of the fridge. Leveraging their long running friendships with each other, Emma Curtiss, Melissa Knowles, and Terry Crane put all their talents and quirky craftiness into this dada circus romp. They climb, cavort, invert, revert, and subvert in a capricious acrobatic tale for the ages. Featuring ropes, trapezes, Cyr wheel, equilibrism, handbalancing, and clown.

Appropriate for all ages. 85 minutes.

Alice Di Micele & Force of Nature in Concert on Saturday, July 27th at 7pm at the pavilion!

"Alice’s music has that great combination of earthiness & groove that keeps in funky from the inside out. She’s for real.” - Bonnie Raitt

Get your tickets at: http://www.lopezcenter.org/goto.php?page=tickets&eid=2821 and Paper Scissors on the Rock!

The first thing you'll notice about Alice Di Micele is her voice. With a five-octave range that is intense, sensual, rich and soulful, Di Micele has been known to turn a noisy bar silent within a few notes. Her warm presence and humor disarm and create a rare intimacy between audience and performer. Whether singing a jazzy-folk number, belting a sassy blues, crooning a hushed ballad, or rocking out on one of her trademark rhythmic earthy grooves, Alice is a vocalist that moves people. A kick-ass guitarist as well, whether playing solo or with a band "Force of Nature" her acoustic guitar conjures percussive poly-rhythms, bass lines, and melodies that perfectly frame her vocals.

With seventeen solo recordings to her credit her songwriting has covered a lot of ground. Her early albums are filled with folky anthems to the earth and as her music has grown so has her ability to express universal themes touching on politics and environmental concerns, human relationships and emotions all in a very musical way. Di Micele cannot be pegged into one category or style as she is truly unique. On her latest album "Interpretations: Vol 1," Alice shares her skill as an interpreter of other people’s songs including tunes from Neil Young, Kate Wolf, Rev. Gary Davis, Sting, the Grateful Dead, Tom Petty, Christine McVie, and Abbey Lincoln.

Her band "Force of Nature" consists of her long-time bassist Rob Kohler, drummer/back up singer Nick Kirby, and guitarist Andy Casad.

Rob has toured with Alice for over 30 years and has also taught music at the Stanford Jazz Workshop, NOCA in New Orleans, and plays jazz with the Peterson-Kohler Collective, Halie Loren, and many others.

Nick started playing drums at 2 years old with his dad Sonny Boy Kirby and is not only an amazing drummer, but a bassist, singer, and guitarist as well.

Andy Casad is an award winning finger style guitarist and his duo The Fret Drifters have toured the US and Australia to rave reviews and wide acclaim.

This year marks the 24th year of Lopez Center for Community and the Arts’ Andy and Dolly Holland Spirit Award. The Spirit Award Committee is seeking nominations for the 2023 Lopez Spirit Award recipient(s).

Windborne Singers in Concert on Thursday February 8 @ 7pm

Ticketed $20/ Youth $10
Buy Tickets Online: http://www.lopezcenter.org/goto.php?page=tickets&eid=2800
Available also at: Paper Scissors On The Rock

"The most exciting vocal group in a generation," Windborne's captivating show draws on the singers' deep roots in traditions of vocal harmony, while the absolute uniqueness of their artistic approach brings old songs into the present. Known for the innovation of their arrangements, their harmonies are bold and anything but predictable.

With a 20-year background studying polyphonic music around the world, Lauren Breunig, Jeremy Carter-Gordon, Lynn Rowan, and Will Rowan share a vibrant energy onstage with a blending of voices that can only come from decades of friendship alongside dedicated practice. The ensemble shifts effortlessly between drastically different styles of music, drawing their audience along on a journey that spans continents and centuries, illuminating and expanding on the profound power and variation of the human voice.

BBC Traveling Folk describes Windborne as "subverting expectations and redefining the genre [of vocal music]… just absolutely phenomenal!" Audiences and critics lavish praise upon the singers not only for their technical mastery, but for the passion, engagement, and connection with each other and the audience that imbues each performance with a rare power.

But there's another, crucial dimension to Windborne that guides and roots their artistry. They are adherents to folk music's longtime alliance with social activism, labor and civil rights, and other movements that champion the oppressed, the poor, and the disenfranchised. Their songs burst with lyrics that, while penned decades or centuries ago, still ring true in modern times, and Windborne's dynamic harmonies breathe new life into these songs.
