You might remember Gabriela Montero from our 2018/2019 season when she gave a dynamic solo performance that included live improvisation. Los Alamos Concert Association co-commisioned the "Canaima" quintet that she and Calidore String Quartet will perform at our first concert of the season on Saturday, October 19th at 7 pm. The "Canaima" quintet premiered on May 5, 2024 at the Gilmore Piano Festival in Kalamazoo, MI.

Pianist Gabriela Montero's visionary interpretations and unique compositional gifts have garnered her critical acclaim and a devoted following on the world stage. Born in Venezuela, Montero started her piano studies at age four, making her concerto debut at age eight in her hometown of Caracas. This led to a scholarship from the government to study privately in the USA and then at the Royal Academy of Music in London with the late Hamish Milne, where she is also a fellow. Celebrated for her exceptional musicality and ability to improvise, Montero has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras while also being a frequent recitalist and chamber musician on the international stage.

Canellakis-Brown Duo gave a thrilling performance, particularly of the Rachmaninoff Sonata for Cello and Piano. In the second half they played beautiful compositions of their own and finally had the audience delighted with a Bulgarian themed piece. A fitting finale to the 77th season.

Here they are featured with our new artistic director, Linda Deck.

We are so fortunate to be hosting the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet THIS SATURDAY, February 10th for an afternoon concert at 3 at Smith Auditorium at Los Alamos High School!

Winner of a 2005 Grammy Award, their “Guitar Heroes” CD released on Telarc is a brilliant follow-up to their Grammy nominated “LAGQ-Latin.” “Spin” (Telarc, 2006) continues their explorations of jazz and contemporary music. “LAGQ: BRAZIL” (Telarc, 2007), including collaborations with vocalist Luciana Souza, was released to rave reviews, and their newest recording of the Rodrigo “Concierto Andaluz” and Sergio Assad’s “Interchange”, written specifically for them, was released on Telarc in Spring 2010, and quickly climbed to top spot on the Billboard charts. The live DVD of “The Ingenious Gentleman: Don Quixote” was released on the Mel Bay label in spring 2012. In 2015, the LAGQ released their latest album titled “New Renaissance,” a unique blend of renaissance originals and renaissance-inspired compositions by Dusan Bogdanovic and Ian Krouse. 🎼 ❤️

Happy (Belated Birthday) Franz Schubert!

The Austrian composer Franz Schubert (January 31, 1797 – November 19, 1828) was one of the greatest composers of the late Classical and early Romantic eras. Despite his short life, Schubert left behind a vast oeuvre, including more than 600 secular vocal works, seven complete symphonies, sacred music, operas, piano and chamber music. His most notable works included Erlkönig, written in 1815 and based on a poem by Goethe; Ave Maria!, written in 1825; and the Symphony No. 9 in C Major, begun in 1825.

One more week to an exciting guitar concert featuring the Los Angeles Guitar Concert LAGQ. The program in Los Alamos, entitled "From Bach to Brazil," highlights their newest member, Brazilian guitarist Douglas Lora and the new formation of LAGQ. The program draws heavily upon some of LAGQ's most popular pieces from the Telarc release “LAGQ: Brasil”, including works by Pascoal, Villa-Lobos, Assad, and Bellinati, as well as Douglas’ composition Maracasalsa. It then lingers south of the border as it were with Two Mexican Pieces by Aaron Copland. The program also includes Opals by Australian composer Phillip Houghton, which is the feature track of their 2022 recording “Opalescent." Rounding out the performance are compositions by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (Danse Négre), J.S.Bach (Prèlude #1 in C Major from The Well-Tempered Clavier and Little Fugue in G minor) and Beethoven (Adagio Sostenuto from the "Moonlight" Sonata).

What a concert Delirium Musicum put on for us - and that too with two encore numbers! There was energy (Summer from Max Richter's Four Seasons), gravitas (Shostakovich Kamersinfonie Op 110a), world music (Gabriela Lena Frank's Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout), modern twists on baroque music (Michi Wianko's Variations on the La Folia theme) and even a nod to pop culture (Misirlou from Pulp Fiction).

Afterwards the ensemble hung out in the lobby signing CDs and apparently soaked in the local vibe at Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op on what might have been one of the coldest nights of the year.

Delirium Musicum kicks off their 2024 tour with tonight's concert at 7 pm in Los Alamos, New Mexico! Kick off your weekend with this energetic ensemble - tickets are available at the door.
