He appeared mostly in small parts, but his first leading role came in Raoul Walsh's Western The Big Trail (1930), an early widescreen film epic that was a box-office failure. He played leading roles in numerous B movies during the 1930s, most of them also Westerns, without becoming a major name. John Ford's Stagecoach (1939) made Wayne a mainstream star, and he starred in 142 motion pictures altogether. According to biographer Ronald Davis, "John Wayne personified for millions the nation's frontier heritage."
Wayne's other roles in Westerns included a cattleman driving his herd on the Chisholm Trail in Red River (1948), a Civil War veteran whose niece is abducted by a tribe of Comanches in The Searchers (1956), a troubled rancher competing with a lawyer (James Stewart) for a woman's hand in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), and a cantankerous one-eyed marshal in True Grit (1969), for which he received the Academy Award for Best Actor. Wayne is also remembered for his roles in The Quiet Man (1952) with Maureen O'Hara, Rio Bravo (1959) with Dean Martin, and The Longest Day (1962). In his final screen performance, he starred as an aging gunfighter battling cancer in The Shootist (1976). Wayne made his last public appearance at the Academy Awards ceremony on April 9, 1979, and died of stomach cancer two months later. In 1980, he was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor of the United States

A man becomes a leader through actions or deeds he has done through out his life. Our leaders have counted coup at least 4 times some maybe more. They carried wounded or dead relatives from the battlefield, before the eyes of the enemy. They themselves were wounded in battle and or has had the horse beneath them shot down. Some have done death defying actions in battle. To be able to wear these wapaha on their head and the red stripes on their legs, these deeds were done at least 4 times. Many of these leaders have had great feasts that have fed all the people at least 4 times. Once they are leaders they are likened to the ash. The ash is strong in the wind and does not bow. If it does bend will quickly recover. Like the ash, a leader must not bend under the criticism or meanness of the people. It remains strong and upright.

White Cow Bull was a survivor of the Battle of a Little Big Horn.Mr Miller found 72 survivors of the battle. He learned their language, 13 in all, and ended up painting all 72. While talking to Joseph White Cow Bull, he was told what happened during the battle. White Cow Bull never said he shot Custer, but from the description of the battle, the Horse the rider was on and corroboration from the others he spoke to, he determined it was Joseph White Cow Bull that shot Custer early in the fight. The horse the rider was on had 4 white stockings and Custer’s horse was the only horse with those markings.
