Do you know who created the wooden tee? Dr. George FranklyGrant, a Black Dentist from Boston.
Born in 1847 in Oswego, New York, Dr. Grant gained entrance into Harvard Dental School, the first university based dental program in the nation. In 1870 Grant graduated with honors, the second African American to earn a degree in dentistry. He was hired by Harvard Dental School in mechanical dentistry. His inventive skills took over and he developed inserts for patients with cleft palates. Grant developed a love for golf, first at Franklin Park just outside Boston, the second public course in the country. His daughter, Frances, also caddied for him on a meadow course that Grant built next to his country home in Arlington Heights.
On December 12, 1899 Dr. Grant received a US patent No. 638,920 the world’s first patent for a golf tee - w wooden spike with a flexible rubber peg for the ball.
In 1991, the United States Golf Association recognized Dr. JorgeGeorge Franklin Grant as the original inventor of the wooden tee.

Charles Luther Sifford aka Charlie Sifford was an American professional golfer who was the first African-American to play on the PGA tour. He won the greater Hartford open in 1967 and the Los Angeles open in 1969. He also won the United Golf Association’s National Negro Open six times and the PGA senior championship in 1975. For his contributions to golf, Sifford was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2004. He was awarded the Old Tom Morris Award in 2007, the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014, and an honorary doctorate from the university of St Andrews. Junior golfer Charlie Woods is named after Charlie Sifford
