In our latest installment of Labels We Love, we are paying tribute to legendary House Music record label, King Street Sounds from New York City. It all started with the famous Paradise Garage nightclub, home of the late great legend Larry Levan. Dance Music luminaries such as Francois Kevorkian, David Morales, Louie Vega, and Junior Vasquez credit the Paradise Garage as a major influence in their styles and even in their decisions to become DJs. Born of this musical phenomenon in 1993, was BPM King Street Sounds. Hisa Ishioka founded the label to continue the ten-year tradition of soulful-spiritual house music that the club helped give birth and lend an ear to in the late 70’s to the late ’80’s. A musical harvest that has yielded some of the sweetest dance records ever, King Street has established itself as one of the finest and most respected labels releasing dance music today.

King Street Sounds is a proper NY Garage House record label that has been on the cusp of dance music, bringing such sounds as Soulful and Vocal House, Deep House, and Afro/Latin/Jazz excursions to the forefront. Not to mention that, to date, it remains one of the few consistently strong independent labels in today’s unforgiving and unstable market. King Street artists include Kerri Chandler, Dennis Ferrer, Louie Vega, Blaze, David Morales, Danny Tenaglia, Joe Claussell, Danny Krivit, Timmy Regisford, Kenny Dope, Roger Sanchez, DJ Pierre, Quentin Harris, DJ Spen, DJ Spinna, Frankie Feliciano, Terrence Parker, Eric Kupper, Mr.V, Kiko Navarro,Sean McCabe, Groove Assassin, Manoo, Roland Clark, and Barbara Tucker.

To the left of King Street’s center is Nite Grooves. The label lives up to the company’s reputation for cutting edge, non-conforming musical compositions, releasing darker, more Underground, Techno, Tech House, Deep House, even Lounge, Leftfield, Abstract, and Experimental productions. Since its inception in 1994, the stepchild of its parent label has seen much success with releases produced by Ananda Project, Tiger Stripes, Cevin Fisher, Ron Trent, jOHNNYDANGEROUs, Sunshine Jones, DJ Aakmael, Wolf Story, Sebb Junior Doug Gomez, Fish Go Deep, Forteba, Pezzner, FNX Omar, Cee ElAssaad and the list goes on.

In this thirty first installment of the Producer Spotlight Series we’re highlighting House Music producer duo Chaos In The CBD. New Zealand-born brothers Ben and Louis Helliker-Hales (aka Chaos in the CBD) create understated house and techno that encompass elements of jazz. The duo began releasing music in the early 2010s, truly arriving with the release of 2015's Midnight in Peckham; the EP's hypnotic, horn-driven title cut became an underground hit. Numerous releases on the duo's own In Dust We Trust imprint followed, including 2017's Accidental Meetings and 2022's Intimate Fantasy. Their first commercially issued DJ mix, Fabric Presents Chaos in the CBD, arrived in 2023.

Born in 1989, the brothers were brought up listening to their parents' rock records, going on to join jazz and indie bands in their early teenage years. In the mid-2000s they discovered electronic music, eventually learning to produce and DJ. In 2011 they began touring in Europe, encouraging them to leave Auckland permanently for better access to their European audience; they moved to Peckham, London in 2012.

Over the next three years they released a diverse set of EPs, including the jazz/disco-infused 816 to Nunhead and the understated techno of No Signal Found, both on Urulu's Amadeus Records. In 2015 they released a standout EP, Midnight in Peckham, through Rhythm Section International. Featuring complex drum patterns and the inclusion of Isaac Aesili on trumpet, the record sold out in less than two weeks. The next two records, Constraints of Time Travel on Church and Global Erosion on YAM Recordings, saw them double down on the jazz elements in their music. In 2016, they remained with Rhythm Section International for Invisible Spectrum, and also began a working relationship with Japan's Mule Musiq, releasing the EPs Digital Harmony and Subterranean Storm.

In 2017 Chaos in the CBD set up the In Dust We Trust label alongside Jon Sable, launched with the release of the Accidental Meetings EP. Much of their subsequent material was released through their imprint, although Mule Musiq issued Comfort Zone (2017) and Hydrate (2019), while Emotional Intelligence (2019), featuring collaborations with jazz musicians like Nathan Haines and Joe Armon-Jones, was released by Neroli. Chaos in the CBD and Sable released the dub-influenced Te Puke Thunder in 2021. This was followed by the duo's Brainstorm and Intimate Fantasy (2022). Fabric Presents Chaos in the CBD, an official mix for the famed London club, appeared in 2023, including the duo's original track "Higher Elevation."

Café Tropicalia pays homage to one of the longest and most memorable sounds of the Tropicalia movement that began in the late ’60s. The Tropicalia movement influenced the sounds of what Latin House Music is known for today. This style of music highlighted the tropical sounds of Brazil, Latin music, the Balearic sounds from Ibiza where DJs of legendary venues like Café del Mar and Café Mambo first began playing it, putting this type of music on the map. In this series, we have cherry-picked tracks like “Cada Vez” from producers and DJs who helped popularize Latin & Brazilian House Music worldwide in the 90’s-2000’s like Louie Vega, Kenny Dope Gonzalez, Johnny Fiasco, and Hector Romero to name a few. Who created a style of House Music that became quintessentially Latin House Music.

In this thirtieth installment of the Producer Spotlight Series we’re highlighting House Music producer duo Spirichaser. Spiritchaser duo Mark Bamford & Richard Earnshaw started producing electronic music together during in the late 90’s. Their early successes producing and remixing for some of the world’s most influential independent and major record labels built the foundations for nearly 20 years of continued output providing chart topping releases and acclaimed performances the world over. Drawing from their diverse influences, along list of original and remix productions on their own Guess Records imprint and other notable labels like Toolroom, Papa Records, Z Records, Arista, BMG, Sony, Soulfuric, and Quantize, inspired a creative motivation leading to their 2010 debut album “1440” (Guess Records). From this their first collaboration with Emily Cook and Est8 with “These Tears” achieved great commercial success in South Africa spending over 38 Weeks in the Media Guide Top Ten and achieving number one spot for over 8 weeks with “These Tears”. And have since continued to maintain their profile with singles such as “Yesterday’s Gone”, “Edge of the World” and “Find A Way”. With 3 further albums and a 4th due out in 2019, their approach to production and performance has always been one focused on the music, the message, the journey and fueling the imagination with a discography and DJ setlist encapsulating a broad array of dance music genres.

Spiritchaser remix and work with some of the Major and Independent Record Labels & Artists as well as consistently releasing top quality, influential Deep House records. Spiritchaser's debut album 1440 was released in mid 2010. In 2011 Spiritchaser achieved International success in South Africa with a huge number one hit record "These Tears" co-produced with fellow Guess Records Artist, Est8. It stayed in the South African national charts top ten for over 36 weeks. In 2019 South African rappe, Kwesta used the distinctive Piano from "These Tears" for his Platinum selling number one hit, "Spirit". In 2012 they released albums 'Tears In The Rain' and 'Chronos' and went on to remix Groove Cartell and Samantha Mogwe's 'You Got Me Singing' the most downloaded single on Traxsource.com for 2013. Upcoming release for 2014 included brand new follow up remix for Groove Cartell and Samatha Mogwe - 'So Far Gone'.
