… I found my thoughts (…) interrupted by my brother and dad playing chess on the opposite side of the room, and for lack of a better reference I decided to draw them. (…)I ended up ditching the realistic proportions of the scene - elongating and twisting them into the early drafts of what would soon be the final distorted figures.

“SCARY MASK”
Black Pen and Ink on Paper
9 ½”H x 7 ½”W

Teacher: Nela V. Steric
My work presents someone, in a form of a “human-like” creature, who is hidden behind a “SCARY MASK”. The mask includes four large horns, and sharp angular shapes along the edges of the mask. The facemask symbolizes how a person may keep a “SCARY MASK” in public, to hide one’s insecurities, emotional vulnerabilities, and a variety of fears from anyone who tries to get too close. This is my message to society in which many individuals may fear and shy away from societies judgements.

This sculpture is abstract but resembles a curving figure that ends in a woman’s torso. The loop-like middle portion of the sculpture is empty and see-through, an open gap that begins to close once the clearer shape of the torso begins. The figure is in motion, curved and moving, but is frozen in her gesture. It is somewhat roughly sculpted, with an almost blocky texture and a reddish-brown coat of paint.
