08/13/2024

This past weekend, Plaza de la Raza hosted the Women Who Submit Conference in Los Angeles, a transformative gathering focused on empowering women and nonbinary writers to submit their work for publication confidently.

At its core, Women Who Submit is about creating physical and virtual spaces where writers can share information, support one another, and demystify the submission process. The conference embodied this mission with workshops and panels that were as informative as they were inspiring.

✍️ From the practicalities of crafting a compelling cover letter to the nuances of finding the right literary journals, the knowledge shared was invaluable. More importantly, the atmosphere was one of collaboration and mutual encouragement—a true reflection of the WWS community spirit.

🌍 Women Who Submit started with a simple idea: a submission party in a kitchen, where women could set goals, exchange feedback, and hit “send” on their work. Today, it’s grown into a powerful movement with a vibrant network of writers supporting each other’s journeys.

To everyone at Women Who Submit, thank you for creating a space where we can grow, share, and succeed together.

🎊 With excitement for the LA 2028 Olympic Games, we flashback to the 1984 Olympic Arts Festival held at Plaza de la Raza as part of the Los Angeles Olympic festivities.

☀️ In the summer of 1984, Plaza hosted a lively celebration of folklife traditions featuring a diverse array of traditional music, food and local artisans. The Olympic Arts Festival showcased the work of skilled artisans and provided a space for cultural exchange and appreciation amid the excitement of the ‘84 Games.

📸 Photos include vintage views of Plaza de la Raza in Lincoln Park and a rare photo of the late actress Carmen Zapata and Plaza supporter Glenn Clark, admiring Amate bark paintings on display as a part of the 1984 Olympics Folklife Arts Festival.

About the Artist: “This painting was sparked by a bowl of spaghetti. Italian immigrants introduced spaghetti to the black communities of Harlem and New Orleans in the late 19th century, as a contribution to large family gatherings. Over time, spaghetti in black households has become a staple, often prepared with ingredients like sugar or ketchup due to limited access to fresh tomatoes. Beyond being a meal, spaghetti serves as a symbol of connection within black families across generations. This piece is a tribute to my beloved comfort food, the dish that will forever evoke feelings of home no matter where I am.” -Jade Bell

Artist Bio: My name is Jade Bell. I am a Black tattoo artist and painter located in Los Angeles, California. Through my artwork, I aim to offer a unique perspective on the world, shining a spotlight on the beauty of BIPOC femmes. My creations are characterized by vibrant illustrations that exude a sense of joy and playfulness. This piece is for sale.

About the Artist: “This image was photographed in Oaxaca,
at the casita of a dear friend who has made me feel como parte de la familia.
Pictured in this photo is someone spreading aciento on a memelita (a oaxacan antojito ) with a portrait of myself overlayed to give the effect of a double exposure. The piece “Te cocino unas memelitas” portrays how home cooked meals can make us feel warm and comforted within ourselves; just the way home does.” -Lucy Luna This piece is for sale.

About the Artist: “Dreams in a Black Liquid Space”, is an illustration of my inner child and adult self. As a child the things that lurked in the dark terrified me. Bedtime became a time of stress. My father always talked to me about not fearing the dark and would stay awake with me until I fell asleep. One of our favorite past times was watching the discovery channel. He especially loved the ocean themed episodes. As I got a bit older, still afraid of the dark, a deep sea related documentary came on the tv. It was the most beautiful thing. The amazing things that lurked in the dark. The weird creatures, the twinkling bioluminescence, the unknown became my comfort. As my fascination for the deep sea grew, my fear of the dark went away. It became my stress reliever as I grew into adulthood. Now, the dark, the thing that I used to fear is now where I come to rest. Get a good night sleep, reflect and get inspired. I can dream in black liquid space.”-Jessica Cuautle This piece is for sale.
