Sorry to be MIA for so long - I'm moving! Or actually, I've moved!
DON'T WORRY, didn't leave LA or the country or anything, in fact am still Ktown-ish (can't give up my proximity to Asian grocery stores!)😉
I shall return once things are more settled, but for now, I wanted to share one last look at where all your orders have been made the past 7 years.
Yup, this is it: thousands of Malaysian meals, a bajillion pineapple tarts, gallons of kaya and sambal, pandan cakes stacked to the skies, all on this here dinky 4-top stove and three bits of countertop space. Some of you may also recognize it as the set of #allychia - never underestimate the many uses of a small countertop 😆
When the pandemic hit and I started doing takeout, I finally bought a spare folding table to have more surface area to box meals faster (I don't know if other chefs agree, but countertop space is THE most valuable kitchen resource to me). Then the crappy fridge the old tenant left behind gave out, and I finally bought my own with an LADWP energy-saver rebate. Then I needed storage for all the takeout packaging and ingredients I was now bulk-buying, so XL commercial chrome shelves that I assembled myself (hilarious, exhausting, not recommended). Then ice cream experiments led to a drop-down freezer on sale at a Walmart that I gingerly drove home (it barely fit in my Prius and blocked my rearview mirror on the freeway!), and eventually, the whole newly-vacated second bedroom became a makeshift pantry. Then this Chinese New Year, I hired my first assistant @athenazecha after realizing I couldn't possibly make 11,000 cookies all by myself, and she got COVID-tested and came for 2 weeks and together we rolled/stamped/kneaded/piped/fried/stirred everything while chatting through masks, and hand-cut miles of bubble wrap so the precious fragile cargo wouldn't break, and kept fingers crossed that the poor overwhelmed USPS would not let us or the homesick folks eagerly awaiting down.
