How to kill time between shows.

The post-show exit hallway for this particular theater is essentially a mirror maze for adults. The walls and ceiling are reflective, with tiny lights beaming throughout it. The later the show, the more lubricated the crowd and the more difficult it is to escape. I watch the same group of people walk in circles around the bar trying to detect an exit.

I cram myself into the middle of the hallway to wave and thank people for coming out to see the show. Typically I find it’s important to stand in a location that allows the audience to exit without guilting them into telling me, “Good job.” I’d rather people want to say hello after than force it. But in this cramped circus hallway, that’s not an option.

Most are smiling. Some tell me how much they enjoyed it. A few request selfies. Others pass with blank expressions, making direct eye contact, potentially not realizing that I was the guy they had been staring at for 45 minutes. One lady goes into a long description of how sad she is her husband wasn’t here to see it. She tells me he is a teacher and just loves mentalism. Half listening, I silently wonder how their marriage is going if she decides to take a seven-day cruise without him.

Most people want to find a way to take what they have seen and relate it to their own lives. I try to keep this in mind with any scripting I am writing for stage. No one cares about you, they care about themselves and their personal experiences. It’s a human quality we all share.

Why do we love our favorite movies or our favorite music? Because there is something in it that reflects our own life experiences.

Halfway through, a seventy-something man holding a cocktail, with a nose as red as Rudolph’s, begins to tell me that he was in the corner and could not see anything. When I politely apologized, he abruptly told me I should have stood further back so HE could see the show. Despite me spending four years at theater school, he felt it was his duty to give me blocking advice. But, the way he carried himself did not indicate that he had any theatrical training.

Everything inside me wanted to tell this man to politely f**k off. In an instant, he stole the joy I was having from a great show and kind compliments away. Like some sort of Boomer Grinch. And I hated him for it.

I have had to do a lot of work on my anger most of my life. Exercise, zen philosophy and medication help. But the biggest success rate comes when I don’t take things personally. This man was clearly the type of person who was miserable no matter the situation. And who I am guessing routinely calls the manager at every dining establishment he frequents. That’s on him, not me. You can’t react to people like this.

I also don’t know what happened to him prior; Maybe his dog died, maybe he learned that his best friend just got sick, or in the immortal words of Lady Gaga, maybe he was just born that way.

97% of the people who walked out of the theater had a good time. And forcing myself to shift the focus on that, rather than the 3% of people who will find a reason to hate anything, is all you can do. And in my world-travels doing magic tricks for over 30 years, I find this ratio is fairly accurate for humanity in general. Most are kind, and a few are diarrhea people.

Still overall, pretty good odds for a population of 7 billion.
