BABYLON BERLIN, SEASON 4

Germany, 2021/22, German w/ English subtitles
Directors: Achim von Borries, Hendrik Handloegten, Tom Tykwer, Screenplay: Achim von Borries, Hendrik Handloegten, Tom Tykwer, Khyana El Bitar, Bettine von Borries, Music: Johnny Klimek, Tom Tykwer, Cast: Volker Bruch, Liv Lisa Fries, Lars Eidinger, Irene Böhm, Mark Ivanir

Based on Volker Kutscher’s best-selling “Gereon Rath Mysteries” series of novels, this groundbreaking series follows police detective Rath (Volker Bruch) and his unlikely partner, Charlotte Ritter (Liv Lisa Fries,) as they investigate cases in Weimar-era Berlin, a hotbed of crime and politics, s*x and drugs, emancipation and extremism — all set against the backdrop of the political developments leading from the Weimar Republic to the spread of National Socialism.

Season 4 picks up in Berlin in 1930, where the Golden Twenties have led to the global stock market crash. At the dawn of the new decade and the looming Great Depression, times have undeniably changed. Very few have profited from the crash, like industrialist Alfred Nyssen (Lars Eidinger), who invests his profits and has ambitions that aim for nothing less than the whole world. Many have used the chaos in the city to their advantage, like the American mobster Abraham “Abe” Goldstein (Mark Ivanir), who shamelessly flaunts his wealth while looking for a lost family heirloom. Others have drastically fallen down the social ladder into homelessness and despair, like Toni Ritter (Irene Böhm), who roams the streets of Berlin with a group of young peers, fighting for survival–a fact that makes her sister Charlotte worry and even risk her job. All the while, Gereon’s investigations lead him into the boxing milieu–and politically, uncomfortably close to Hitler’s SA. Yet some are still trying to restore order. It remains questionable to what avail, as the Nazis’ march to power is in full swing.

Join us and on Wednesday, June 5th, @ 7:00 PM at the Laemmle Royal Theater for the LA premiere of Emily Atef's Film SOMEDAY WE'LL TELL EACH OTHER EVERYTHING, based German Author Daniela Krien's best-selling novel of the same name.

SOMEDAY WE'LL TELL EACH OTHER EVERYTHING
Germany (2023), 129 min., German with English Subtitles
Director: Emily Atef, Screenplay: Emily Atef, Daniela Krien, Götz Spielmann, Cast: Marlene Burrow, Felix Kramer, Jördis Triebel, Silke Bodenbender, Christine Schorn, Cedric Eich.
The summer of 1990 is hot in the countryside of Thuringia, in former East Germany. Maria is about to turn 19, lives with her boyfriend, Johannes, on his parents’ farm, and would rather lose herself in books than focus on graduating. With German reunification, there is a sense of a new era dawning as Maria bumps into Henner, the farmer next door. One touch is all it takes to ignite an all-consuming passion between Maria and the headstrong, charismatic man twice her age. In an atmosphere buzzing with possibilities, love is born: a secret passion full of longing and desire that devours everything in its path.

“Atef’s new film, a small-scale drama nevertheless attaining novelistic richness, stands to be her most successful yet, especially given contemporary demand for intelligent stories told from a perspective of female desire.”
– Jonathan Romney, Screen International

Lola (Franka Potente) answers a call from her boyfriend Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu), a small-time courier for a big-time gangster. With Manni’s life on the line, Lola runs through the streets of Berlin to reach him and somehow pick up 100,000 marks along the way, making split-second decisions and encountering acquaintances, family, and strangers. As the clock ticks down, the tiniest choices become life-altering (or life-ending), and the fine line between fate and fortune begins to blur. SCHEIBLETTENKIND
"My class always hovered over me. It shamed me and reminded me that I grew up in a house without books. It reminded me that I am a person whose parents never went to an art museum and whose grandmother has never seen the sea."

"White trash," "ragamuffin," and "peasant" are just a few of the slurs that Eva Müller's protagonist was often called by other children when she was younger. These scolding words were meant to ostracize the young girl who did not come from a privileged background and to put her in her place.
In this award-winning, autofictional graphic novel, Müller tells her own story and the story of her family. In clear, powerful, impressive images of astonishing aesthetic variety, Müller depicts the labor history of a working-class family over the past three generations-- from her grandparents' rural origins, her parents' working-class milieu in West Germany, and her experiences growing up uneducated and poor, to her emancipation as an artist.
Müller's protagonist is caught between two worlds, where her working-class legacy always hovers over her in the form of a snake. At the same time, she tries to navigate through life, finding her way.

Getting ready for Summer?
Join our partners from emago media and the Digital Gym Cinema for special screenings of David Wnendt's multi-award-winning coming-of-age hit SUN & CONCRETE starting Friday, May 10th at the Digital Gym in downtown San Diego. Presented as part of GERMAN CURRENTS KINO San Diego.

SUN & CONCRETE
Germany (2023) 107 min. Digital. German/English with English Subtitles
Director: David Wnendt, Screenplay: David Wnendt, Felix Lobrecht,

It is a record-breaking hot summer in Berlin. For German teens Lukas (Arcos), Gino (Klein-Heßling), and Julius (Wiemer), life in the sprawling Gropiusstadt housing complex in Berlin’s Neukölln district is rough, to say the least. The parks stink, are overrun with drug dealers, and broken bottles are everywhere. Here, you’re either a gangster or a victim. With stress at home, no cash, and no luck with girls, the three friends are certainly no gangsters. While ditching school one day to buy w**d, the boys are caught between two rival dealer-gangs who leave Lukas severely beaten and demand the boys pay 500 Euros as protection money. With no way to come up with the cash, Lukas’ new classmate Sanchez (Maldonado-Morales) proposes a heist: break into the school, steal the brand-new computers, and re-sell them. Problem solved…almost.

A German box office smash-hit, Wnendt’s (Combat Girls, Wetlands) adaptation of German stand-up comedian and best-selling author Felix Lobrecht’s novel SONNE UND BETON is a raw, often violent, and street-slang-filled portrait of friendship on the rough streets of the city – this too, is Berlin!

Wed, 04/03/2024, 8pm
Concert: KMRU + MICHELLE MOELLER

2220 Arts presents Berlin-based live electronics wizard KMRU and electroacoustic composer Michelle Moeller for a night of sound art and audio exploration.
KMRU's North American tour is supported by the Goethe-Institut.

KMRU is Nairobi-born, Berlin-based sound artist Joseph Kamaru. For him, sound is a sensorial medium through which social, material, and conceptual interpretations are manifested in his works. KMRU carries with him a repository of listening experiences from Nairobi and beyond expanding his sonic practices, bringing an awareness of surroundings through creative compositions, installations, and performances. He has earned international acclaim from his performances at the Barbican, Berlin Atonal, Présences électronique, and releases on Editions Mego, Subtext, Seil Records. KMRU has carved out a serious and definitive space on the list of essential authors in ambient experimental music – one of the most prolific and innovative artists in his field.

Michelle Moeller (b. St. Louis MO) is a composer, performer, and teacher based in Oakland, CA. Her musical practice is ever-evolving, guided by restless curiosity and natural resistance to a singular approach. Drawing from both a foundational lyricism and a penchant for dissonant textures, she uses live signals, custom effects, and computer synthesis to build intricate electroacoustic systems. She studied piano performance at the University of Missouri and received an MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media from Mills College.

Pessimistic Jakob Fabian (Schilling) ekes out a meager living as a copywriter by day. At night, he drifts through the underbelly of Berlin with his wealthy friend Labude (Schuch).
