“I just finished Annie Grindlay’s Advanced Intensive, and I was really resistant to taking another acting class because I went to college for acting. I got a BFA, and I moved to LA, and I was like, “Why would I spend more money to take more classes when I just did that?” And then I joined Annie’s class, and Annie’s class was built for the working actor. It was not overwhelming...I felt like it was consistently building up my confidence to go into auditions, the next day even. The lessons are so structural and so practical about how to apply to each scene, each side you get for each audition, and how different they are. And I really appreciated that. It made me feel like I had just the right amount of work to challenge myself, push me forward, and not overwhelm me.”

She booked it. She prepared. She knew her lines, her points of view, and her backstory for every moment...But the most important thing my client told me after working on her first guest star role for a new Apple TV show last week?

She had to be ready to let it all go and play. As a guest star, your role is to either move the story forward or backwards. To do that successfully, you’ve got to be flexible. You have to adapt, because at the end of the day, this isn’t your story. You’re just a small part of a much bigger picture.

Hold onto this reminder the next time you’re on set. ✨ 💎

Hearing stories from actors who have felt unsupported in their craft is heartbreaking. Some have shared experiences of being shamed for missing a class, criticized for setting boundaries to protect their mental health, or nitpicked for not performing exactly as expected. Others have even been unfairly blamed for not meeting their coach’s expectations. These situations can leave actors feeling like they must be perfect, constantly defend themselves, or fall into the trap of people-pleasing.

This is not how it should be.

Your acting studio should be a sanctuary. A safe, supportive space where you can truly focus on growing as an artist. At Annie Grindlay Studio, we understand how vulnerable this process can be, and we are committed to creating an environment that feels welcoming, encouraging, and inclusive.

Here, you’ll find a creative space where you can explore your art freely, a community of supportive students traveling this path with you, and teachers who respect and uplift you. Our goal is simple: to help you succeed and become the actor you’ve always known you could be.

You deserve a nurturing space to grow. We’re here to provide it.

If you have experienced harsh coaching before, we understand. We have heard many stories about this, and we empathize with you.

“I would highly recommend Annie's class. The feedback that she gives is really direct and effective without being overwhelming. You never feel like nitpicked or like torn apart. I always leave feeling more confident to go off and do the second take, which is always like light-years better, and yeah, I would just highly recommend it for anybody who's either had a little bit of experience or even none at all. The environment is just really welcoming and supportive.”

We have been discussing the ongoing debate about how much time casting directors take to evaluate an actor during auditions. As stated before, most CDs watch audition tapes with care and respect. At AGS, we spend a great deal of time teaching actors that their beginnings and endings are very important to living the life of the story for auditions.

Last week, we reposted our strategy to grab a casting director's attention in the first 10 seconds of your audition. Make sure to go back and save that post if you haven't already done so. Today, we are reposting our strategy for standing out in the last 10 seconds of your audition, which will inherently impress casting.

You do not have to be perfect. The goal is to live the life of the story all the way until the end. Use these strategies to practice. You will discover how captivating your audition is when you prep and attempt to be "tapped in" right in the beginning and at the end of your audition.

Tell us! What other choices have you made to create a strong ending for your auditions? Share in the comments.

Next time you prepare for an audition, try this approach. Step away from the page and give yourself time to start visualizing and thinking about the life before breaking it down with the page. Live in the world, sit and think about that for a good amount of time before you even start. You might be surprised at how much it transforms your process. ✨ 💎

I hope this helps!

Those auditioning for guest star or co-star roles, make sure to always watch the most current episodes of the show you’re auditioning for.

It’s not enough to skim through a summary; actually watching the show can give you critical insights to help you book the role. For example, one of my clients was auditioning for Abbott Elementary. Early in the series, only series regulars spoke directly to the camera, but as the show progressed, guest stars and co-stars started doing it too. If my client had only read a summary, she would have missed that vital detail about the show's tone.

Watching also helps you pick up on other key factors, like the show’s color tones, which can even influence your wardrobe choices.

The little things matter, so just make sure that you're still physically watching the show you're going out on. Good luck!

Bravo to my Fundamental Intensive students! ☺️❤️

Last month, I had the privilege of coaching a group of incredibly talented actors, and their growth has left me in awe. We focused on strengthening the imagination muscle, which is a key tool for bringing stories to life straight from the page. Many actors often rely on substitution, but this doesn’t always work when the scenario is outside of personal experience. Shifting to this imaginative approach made their audition tapes shine and gave them a newfound confidence when stepping into the room to perform.

Keep shining, everyone. I’m so proud of you all! 👍☺️❤️

With the recent SAG Strikes and the issue with AI coming into the entertainment industry space, we find it interesting that Disney decided to use CGI for the seven dwarfs in the new Snow White film. These roles could have gone to 7 actors who could've had a chance for a more prominent career due to their performance on the screen. What are your thoughts on this subject? Do you believe Disney should have cast actors to portray the seven dwarfs? Why or why not?

I was coaching a new client the other day, and after the coaching, they commented how much they liked the human connection. They said that previously, when they didn't coach, they would just record the other person's lines on their phone and run it that way. Sure, it’s convenient, but it lacks that intimacy component. The bond you get when you're truly present with another person.

When you coach with another person (whether on Zoom or in-person), you build a bond. You learn to read their eyes, energy, and subtle emotional shifts. And guess what? That’s exactly what happens on set. You're going to be dealing with other human beings constantly. Practicing on your own or off a wall won't give you the intimacy of another person.

Next time you're coaching, prioritize working with someone. It’s in the small, genuine moments of connection that your performance comes alive and keeps us watching. ✨ 💎

I hope this helps!
