“A Colored Perspective”

The title of the installation that I did for festival
I wanted to illustrate dimension and complexity by looking at how color is created as well as illustrate the age old tale of nature vs man made. Black is the container and the holder of all color and white rejects light. Inside my black box is a precious sense of sadness where beauty is born. I used plumosa fern for this installation because it is both soft, pretty, feather-like and somewhat unasumming, but also resiliant and will destroy anything in its path if it is not tamed. You will find the green fern taking over the space in little ways throughout the space.

This project ended up being very personal to me and such a reflection of all of the different aspects of who I am and what I try to put out into the world. Very proud of this work and all the beautiful loving hands that were apart of making this massive project come to life. Thank you and for being right by my side the whole time. And to

Cheers to creativity!

I had the pleasure of shining my light of creative expression with . I have been thinking a lot about what keeps me going and I realized that I’ve had to self-generate light my whole life. I thought it would be a fun expression to create my own sunny day to symbolize that I am obsessed with ballet theater sets and how they mimic magical and opulent worlds that suspend our disbelief for a short time. I wanted to play with that idea while combining a sunny time at a super bloom beach… Because I want it all! I want sand and flowers and sunlight!! And what better way to get it all than to just create it yourself.

Today is a very interesting day…
As my big body stands on this big ass rock perspective is something that comes up…
Been thinking about this a lot the idea that most if not all of this country’s problems are rooted in our inability to reconcile our history with slavery. Our constitution is a document that is only looking at the interests of white men so anything that challenges those interests or are not understood from the white male perspective are dismissed. This shows up everywhere the basis of capitalism is exploitation of something and this country built its wealth off of slave labor, but here is the gag we still low key (not so low key) think labor should be free. Minimum wage for servers but consumers tip based off of how “good” someone serves you. Or more directly for me people will pay top dollar for flowers, but heaven forbid the labor be more than the actual flower when in fact there is much more labor that gets that flower in your hand than the flower it’s self… This is coming up for me today because of the supreme courts decision to over throw roe vs wade and the disregard of women's bodies and the fact that I can’t get my business to work from the inside… while it looks great from the outside the inside is a mess. This country puts out a great front, but the insides are nasty af. Until we do the hard work of dismantling this system and the passive one percent stop looking to the left to the left for everyone else to make a change and make some sacrifices nothing is ever changing. This is the harsh reality and we are going to hell in a hand basket if we don’t pull it together real quick/ we will all prob have to suffer and lose all of our rights because we just don’t change until it’s painful enough

I mean it’s not like we can totally take the commercialization out of holidays, but we can do it with style and grace!
So we did an installation of giveaway roses in our flower studio (so all the nosey folks wondering what’s going on in our “by appointment only space” here is a peek… lol)
Swing by the for a donut (thank you for the donation and support) and then come to the flower studio and get your rose to the first 100 customers. Everyone is welcome, but it is a black holiday so if you are white take a rose for one of your black friends!

Throwback Thursday to about 2010 a photoshoot I did with
This was a time when I had already been crushed a few times, but I was so optimistic that it would work out. I was just starting I had been growing out my hair so I wore a turban (6yards of cotton that I hand tied every day and it never touched the ground). I was self conscious about my body, but didn’t want to fear the beauty that could be created with it. I didn’t think I was particularly lovable and after 10-11 years of therapy I am still single and struggle with self worth even though my outward accomplishments are grand. The irony of the more you achieve the more alone you feel, the more work you do on yourself the more you feel like an outsider. I look at myself in this photo and can see pride for who I am, a out black man, but I also see deep in my eyes the look of wanting to be excepted and loved for who I am (thinking about this in a more romantic context as i am still struggling with that).
In our ever evolving environment I just didn’t know that the world would get increasingly more toxic to the levels that it is. It is becoming more difficult to stay the course because of all of the hectic energy in the world, killing black folks, making excuses for white folks, trying to control women’s bodies when men can’t control their own. Capitalism is really highlighting the extreme of the haves and the have nots…
This photo just gave me some time to reflect and thought I would share… also I have been on the toilet for the last 26 mins and my leg is starting to fall asleep (can’t believe I just used that #) (believe that one)

Well it’s happening y’all my flower sculptures titled Protect my Opulence will be featured in the new Manny Farber Show One Day at a Time @mocalosangeles in the form of weekly arrangements delivered throughout the duration of the show.
