✨Be a part of it! The Music Center convenes artists, communities and ideas with the goal of deepening the cultural lives of every resident in Los Angeles County. The $70 million non-profit performing arts organization has two divisions: TMC Arts and TM

C Ops. TMC Arts, The Music Center’s programming engine, provides year-round programming inside The Music Center’s four theatres, on Jerry Moss Plaza, outside at Grand Park—a 12-acre adjacent green space—in schools and other locations all over Los Angeles County and on a digital platform called The Music Center Offstage. TMC Arts presents world-class dance with Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center, free and low-cost public concerts and events, as well as live and digital K–12 arts education programs, workshops, performances, interactive experiences and special events. TMC Ops manages the theatres, the Plaza and Grand Park, which comprise $2 billion in county assets, on behalf of the County of Los Angeles. On June 30, 1984, Urban Bush Women premiered in New York City and started what would become a 40-year legacy of amplifying the underrepresented voices and unheard stories of Black women+ through dance and philanthropy! ✊🏽💥

Since that day, this Company and its fearless leader Jawole Willa Jo Zollar have pushed boundaries, created stunning works that uplift their communities and speak out on issues of social justice; and as we prepare to welcome them to Los Angeles, here is a look back at a few memorable moments from their Company history! 📍📖

Jawole Willa Jo Zollar's "S**T!… The Complex Lives of Al & Dot, Dot & Al Zollar" was inspired by her childhood growing up in Kansas City's Black neighborhoods and is infused with personal details that tell the story of a family’s journey through the Great Migration and the realities of life in 1940s America. 💥🎺

Performed by the electrifying Urban Bush Women, with live music by Craig Harris; this one-act jazz spectacular is a moving tribute to family and the dreams we all carry within us.

Our Story

As Los Angeles’ performing arts center, The Music Center has served millions of patrons for more than five decades and is one of the largest and most respected performing art centers in the nation. With four world-class resident companies and five exceptional venues, we have enjoyed bringing Los Angeles the very best in music, dance, opera and theatre.

We have also developed models for arts education initiatives that continue to impact students and teachers in and outside of the classroom. From The Music Center’s Spotlight program, an annual scholarship and training program for high school students, to The Music Center On Tour, which brings world-class performing artists to the classroom, The Music Center’s lauded educational initiatives are committed to inspiring the minds of students in Los Angeles County.

As the 21st century has ushered in new ways of communicating and creating, the arts are no longer the exclusive purview of those who purchase tickets to sit in a concert hall or theatre. The Music Center is one of the first arts organization to recognize this with a slate of innovative low-cost or free arts programming that is relevant to a range of audiences and interests. These successful programs engage the community and bring the arts alive. Sleepless: The Music Center After Hours, Dance DTLA, Grand Park + The Music Center’s 4th of July Block Party, and N.Y.E.L.A. are all designed to gather and connect people across lines of race, ethnicity, gender, class and age in an interdisciplinary and multi-sensory art experience, engaging thousands of Angelos.
