Fictional character Jimbob Hassenfuss sounds a lot like Louisa resident Larry Kavanagh. Or maybe it’s the other way around. Either way, Kavanagh explores the joy and extremes of retirement in his newest book with a title too outlandish to only print once, “Do Octogenarians Count Old Goats to go to Sleep?”

In Chapter 5, Hassenfuss and his wife Sue Ann (who some might say bears a resemblance to Kavanagh’s wife, Judith) have a disagreement about one of their potential retirement pursuits: opening a book shop that also features wine and cheese.

The two go back and forth on the different ways to approach this endeavor, but ultimately, do not reach a mutually agreed upon decision. Their discussion turns elsewhere in the book, but both the Kavanagh’s said similar situations have occurred between the two who are in their 80’s.

“Oh gosh, [Larry] has come up with another crazy idea,” Judith said. “As you know from all of the stuff he’s done over the years.”

Titles that Kavanagh has held include NASA physicist, farmer, teacher, and leader of the juggling club at Louisa County High School.

Emma Alexander is a 17-year-old senior at Louisa County High School. Back in June, Alexander placed 2nd at the Virginia FFA State Convention in the career development event for employment skills, automatically qualifying her for “The Big E.” Formally known as The Eastern States Exposition, this event has been America’s Premier Exposition and the world’s only multi-state fair for over a century, representing all six New England States. The event features a showcasing of livestock, entertainment, and commercial & industrial developments to the Northeastern United States. The event took place from Sept. 12-15, and both the competition and banquet were held at the Sheraton Hotel in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Alexander credited her FFA advisor Ellie Daney and CTE Director Bo Bundrick for helping prepare her for the contest, stating that she was just excited for the opportunity.

“I quickly fell in love with the idea and began working to improve and gain knowledge about this competition,” Alexander stated. “I did not expect to do as well as I did, since this was only my second time competing in this particular CDE,”

Click below to discover why FFA advisor, Ellie Daney, believes Alexander’s performance was a testament to her potential:

Our Story

I am legit...licensed by the Circuit Court of Louisa County. For the time being...COVID RULES: masks & distancing required...outdoor services preferred... indoors only w/ severe restrictions on masks etc. I will officiate for any eligible couple. Non-religious preferred...at most, Christian “lite.” If you want a heavy-duty church service, get a church and an active minister. I am willing to do varied ceremonies, using vows I provide or which the couples provide. Add music, poetry or prose readings, etc. I am willing to incorporate various cultural ceremonies such as handfasting, whatever...with your help.. .. I do NOT insist on pre-marital counseling. For those who want more fun, I am also ordained by the Universal Life Church, and by the Church of Bacon and the Church of the Latter-day Dude. I will try anything except underwater ceremonies, skydiving ceremonies, or others dangerous to life and limb. (SEE Covid-19 rules above). I do not mind well-behaved dogs in attendance, but do ask that participants & guests turn off phones & make/take no calls during the ceremony. My fee is a flat $100 for a Louisa wedding, plus same for rehearsal, higher ($150 and up ) if the ceremony is out of Louisa County...same cost for rehearsals. I do require a $50 deposit, refunded if I cannot serve, forfeited if you later book another officiant after I have committed. REHEARSALS: USUALLY I AM NOT NEEDED. DON’T ASK UNLESS YOUR SERVICE IS HIGHLY UNUSUAL.
