THE NAMESAKE

When developing our new direction for the business, it was important for the name to truly reflect our every intention. Let us start with our inspiration.

Oil still life paintings such as this, titled "Vase of Flowers" by Jan Davidsz de Heem tell such intricate stories. These paintings use each visual inch to display life, death, reflections, seasons, and narratives that draw you further in with each viewing. Because of the deep inspiration these paintings evoke "Verhalen" seemed only fitting. Verhalen is Dutch for "stories" and what better way to sum up our motivation. Our hope is that each design and installation pulls you deeper into the narrative and evokes the beauty and complexities of your very own story. Thus Verhalen Floral Studio was born.

INTRODUCING...

For those who have been here from day one cheering on the beautiful florals and sweet treats; I want to extend the biggest thank you. Thank you for your support and enthusiasm for The PHLOUR Shop, we couldn’t have done it without you. This past year has been full of growth and revision. Learning the industry and collectively reviewing where we were and where we wanted to be. With the desire to grow, often pruning follows. As hard of a decision as it was, we have made the choice to set aside our croissants and pastries to focus our efforts and attention solely on our floral endeavors. We are excited for this new direction and felt led to have that reflected in our new name: Verhalen Floral Studio. I am excited to share our journey to this new namesake in the coming days, but for now we CELEBRATE!!!!!

We are moving (still in the 'ville)! Our apologies for a lack of croissants and beautiful flowers to scroll through this summer. We have been cooking up some plans to find a bigger space to give you even more of what you already love! We can't wait to get back in the swing of things early this fall. 🌾STORYTELLER🌾

Some of the most moving forms of beauty come from triumph over despair. The reality behind this picture is that I forgot my beloved ranunculus in the studio to hydrate and kept putting off arranging until it was seemingly too late.

My brain started reeling and I was reminded of how much beauty these stems STILL held. Their petals now had a story to tell. They were not fresh in the traditional sense but perfectly seasoned with small whispers of decay juxtaposed with the buds ever still reaching.

The PHLOUR Shop works with YOUR stories and pulls out the beauty wrapped up in celebration, ache, survival, discovery, new beginnings, and more. It's our favorite part of what we do. We love being your storyteller.

🌾SUGAR AND SPICE🌾

This blackberry lemon explosion of a cake was so fun to work with but in order for those flavors to shine a secret weapon was needed. BLACK PEPPER. Before you clutch your pearls, the warm spice and abrasive kick of black pepper is the exact perfect compliment to this cake's bright berry flavor. Don't be afraid to reach for your spice cabinet while baking. Spices are the lifeline to complete flavor.

There is something to be said about the afterglow. Nature illuminates with applause after a rainstorm. This piece was inspired by that glow. No matter the storms we walk through today, the light of tomorrow is ready to shine through.
