The fourth generation of the family was the legal counsel of many of the Kentucky distilleries in the early 1900s.
In 1909, He had helped President Taft draft the Taft decision which defined what straight, whiskey bourbon are.
When the United States Congress passed the 18th amendment prohibiting the manufacture, cell and transportation of alcohol, he was asked to argue against the amendment in front of the Supreme Court, which he did twice in 1919 and 1920.
He put up some valid arguments, but lost both times and what this label tells us is that just a few weeks prior to prohibition taking effect he had bourbon bottled for his own private consumption. It is very likely this is the last bourbon bottled before prohibition took effect.

Fun fact: this label was found in a scrapbook just 4 years ago!!
* it’s important to note that it was not illegal to consume alcohol, and if you already had alcohol on your home, it was perfectly legal to drink it and to share it with your guests.*
