Weekly tips from your local florist and gardener.
Week 2: Container Gardening Growing Greens
Unsavory moments:
* Store bought lettuce that wilts and browns in two days
* Bitter and chemical taste in your salad
* Not enough space to plant a garden
* Not enough time to plant and w**d your garden
* Did I mention the pests in a garden are annoying, lol
Creative Solutions for growing clean food with less space and time.
* Plant your lettuce or spinach in a large pot for multiple plants filled with nitrogen rich potting soil combined with a few scoops of compost
* fertilize once every two weeks with a water soluble fertilizer during the summer months.
* Plant onion plants with lettuce as a natural pest deterrent and a favorable companion with lettuce. (The onions in the photo are hidden behind the lettuce due to young plant height)
* Cover top of soil with wood chips or composting bark to reduce w**ds and maintain moisture during the warmer days
* In our zone I have grown my lettuce year round in a container and cover plants during freeze spells. It is a great cool weather crop
* Once lettuce is harvested and washed, wrap in slightly damp paper towel and cover with a clear pliable bag left slightly open while stored in the refrigerator to prolong shelf life. (My lettuce has lasted two weeks)
* At last, fresh greens without the bitter or chemical taste leaving you with more time utilizing less space
* Did I mention that your new container garden serves as a sanctuary for your pink flamingo friends and gifters ( I won't mention any names or anyone like Janet Keene and Lizabeth Weaver ) lol
Happy gardening and Bon AppΓ©tit! π

A day in the life of a florist and gardener sharing a few thoughts, tips and tricks along the way.
Week 1 Bearded Iris
A striking and fragrant addition to your garden, the tall bearded iris, 'Edith Wolford' blooms late spring to early summer.
What makes this flower so inviting?
* Low maintenance, easy to grow
* Enjoys full sun to part sun
* Beautiful shades of blue violet and canary yellow
* Mild grape - flavored fragrance
* Easy propagation (divide rhizomes)
* Adds unique texture to your garden with swordlike semi-evergreen leaves
* Deer and rabbit resistant
* drought tolerant once established
Special Note:
The bearded iris may cause discomfort if ingested. Toxic to dogs, cats, and horses.
Consider wearing gloves while handling.
A special weekend with family, friends, and honoring those who gave all!
In memory of our fallen soldiers and Gold Star families during this Memorial Day weekend, Floral Living will be offering free rose wraps. If you know someone you wish to honor, stop by our shop today or tomorrow 11am - 4pm and pick up a complimentary rose wrap.
While I am closed on Memorial Day, a free bucket of rose wraps will be left out at the end of my driveway next to my business sign for you to honor those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Their sacrifice allowed us the freedom of recreation this holiday weekend.
A few ways to honor our fallen soldiers on Veteran's Day:
* Paricipate in the National Moment of Rememberance at 3pm
* Visit a military cemetery, ceremony, or parade
* Display the U.S. flag at your home
* Watch the National Memorial Day Concert
Thank you for supporting those who served! πΊπΈ

Adventuring for the first time with this Pasta Maker gifted by my son Matt. Why was I was intimidated by this shiny piece of metal collecting dust in my pantry for over a year? It is still a mystery. Lol It is finally time to rise up and embrace the experience while making memories, healthy food (from my garden), and fun for the whole family. The good news is that you can store your fresh pasta in the refrigerator for 2 days and in the freezer for 2 months. Lesson learned: Embrace the adventure, make a memory and discover new joy in your day! Stay tuned for more ideas from the garden! Bon AppΓ©tit
