/// Admissions ///
We are happy to provide an open mic series that is all ages and with no cover/entry fee. While it i

s free to come to the open mic, donation while we pass the hat is greatly encouraged. Any monetary contribution to the space will go towards supporting our guest feature and for Mill City Speaks.

/// Location & Entry ///
Coffee and Cotton
at Mill No. 5
250 Jackson St. No. 401
Lowell, Mass. 01852

/// Safer Space & Community Guidelines ///
We strive to foster a space of inclusivity and respect/ We ask everyone to leave (in no particular order): ableism, ageism, classism, fatphobia, homophobia, misogyny, racism, transphobia, and all oppressive language, attitudes, and actions at the door. We ask that we hold ourselves and one another accountable to creating a culture in which we treat each other with consent and respect. This looks like and is not limited to respecting people's physical and emotional boundaries and receiving explicit verbal consent before touching someone or crossing other personal boundaries. Please reach out to Ricky Orng or Douglas Bishop about questions regarding the open mic or slam.

today is a special event and Untitled. we will have a limited open mic today with the rest of our evening dedicated to sharing stories, tributes, memories in celebration of our dear friend Douglas Bishop’s life. That tribute open mic will also include a section which would not be live streamed and video recorded for homies who prefer that option.

The rest of the evening will be streaming on YouTube.

And at 5pm, we will have a drop-in style workshop in the Parlor Room for homies who would like to gather, write, and share before the open mic.

This is a reminder that Tuesday, November 12th, is our next Mill City Speaks Online Workshop. Co-founded by the late Douglas Bishop, the Mill City Speaks Online Workshop aims to foster artistic growth in the Lowell poetry community and beyond. A champion of the literary arts, Douglas spent years creating opportunities for writers to develop their craft and the Lowell Poetry Wheel plans to continue that legacy.

This week’s workshop will be facilitated by Andrew Harrington and hosted on Zoom. Guests will receive access to the virtual meeting space at 6pm, with the workshop commencing at 6:30. The event will conclude at approximately 9pm. Below is the format for the workshop.

✨Check-in / Discussion about current events, both personal and global.
✨Poetry Jump-starter/ an opportunity for attendees to share new work
✨Opportunity for participants to share work in progress and get feedback.

More details in our bio and lowellpoetry.com - Please reach out if you are interested in attending and acquiring the zoom info.

It is with deep sadness that we are reaching out to share with you all news of the passing of our dear friend and cofounder of the Lowell Poetry Wheel, Dr. Douglas Bishop.

Douglas passed away on October 25, 2024. He is survived by a wife, family and community who will all grieve his passing and the many moments that could have been.

But in his physical absence, his spirit, personality, and legacy remain to guide us and we will continue to honor his memory by maintaining the bonds of community and artistic pedagogy he forged for, in and with us.

It is for this reason that we will forgo our November 6th Untitled Open Mic event and instead reconvene on November 20th. We believe it is important to give each other time to grieve, reflect and process, before coming together as a community to share in Douglas’ memory.

If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to reach out to [email protected]

Thank you,
Rikhav and Ricky

This week we have another open mic, feature, and in-person workshop! Joining us is poet, journalist, dancer, magic mogul…Meg Smith!

✨About our feature ✨

Meg Smith is a writer, journalist, dancer and events producer living in Lowell, Mass. She will have copies of her poetry books available for sale, as well as some artwork and fantastical arts from Midnight Mews.

Her poetry and fiction have appeared in publications such as The Cafe Review, Muddy River Poetry Review, Poetry Bay, The Lowell Review, Raven Cage, The Horror Zine, Dark Moon Digest, and many more. She is a longstanding committee member of Lowell Celebrates Kerouac!, which holds an annual festival to honor Lowell native Jack Kerouac.

In producing events, she loves to bring together her passion for spoken word, music, visual art, and dance. This year, she is producing the first-ever Poe in Lowell festival, taking place Oct. 19-20, celebrating Poe’s three visits to Lowell, in 1848 and 1849.

As a journalist she has won numerous awards, including this year, a first-place award for coverage of religion and a second-place award for coverage of history from the New England Newspaper and Press Association. She currently serves as content editor for Worcester Magazine, the award-winning alternative weekly serving the Worcester County area in Massachusetts.

As a Middle Eastern dancer with the stage name Morgana Mirage, she has danced in night clubs, festivals and special events throughout the region. Recently, she began channeling her love of creating fabric art, and drawing and painting, into her arts enterprise, Midnight Mews. She welcomes visits to megsmithwriter.com.
