Once again we bring you interesting facts about Handel's MESSIAH that you may not have already known! Facts like this one: Handel originally wrote MESSIAH for a smaller group of performers. The ensemble for whom he wrote is thought to have had around 20 musicians and 15 singers at the outside. Once again, it was the Victorians who made the change, packing the Crystal Palace with hundreds of musicians and up to 5,000 singers. With this many people it could take up to five hours to get through a perfromance, and thus a perforamnce often made space for a dinner break.

The Lubbock Chorale proudly presents Handel's MESSIAH, in collaboration with LCU Choirs, December 7, 2024 at 7:30 PM in the Crickets Theatre in Buddy Holly Hall! Tickets are on presale now! As we get closer to our performance of Handel's Messiah we thought we'd regale you with some interesting facts about the piece that you may not have known. For instance: Did you know that Handel initially wrote Messiah for Lent? It's true! Messiah made its debut around Easter in Dublin in 1742. According to the Smithsonian Magazine, it was in the 19th century that the Victorians began performing the oratorio during the Christmas season and by the end of the 19th century the practice had become widespread in the US as well.

Tickets are on sale now for our performance, happening in collaboration with Lubbock Christian University Choirs, on November 7 at 7:30pm in the Crickets Theatre in Buddy Holly Hall.
