The Hip Tulip turns 2!
THE HIP TULIP IS 2!!! Two years ago I jumped down the preverbal rabbit hole, hoping for the best…I’m still soaring. :) Last night I went through two years of pictures and put together 9 minutes of our adventures, it’s very hard to condense two years of fun! I went from a huge empty space, that I never thought I’d fill, to “Do we have room for this?”
As with anything, there’s a learning curve. Sometimes I learned the hard or expensive way, how not to do something and other times, it worked out by pure luck. I like finding my own way, sometimes I get lost, but I’m okay with that too. It’s the independence in me. I learn a lot by trial and error, and I’m still learning.
What I wanted, from the beginning, was a standout flower shop. I was taught flower design by a very traditional little flower shop in CT. Carnations, gladiolas , red roses and leather leaf were all shop staples. As I started buying flowers and greens for the store, I found things I used to use in the garden. Literally, let the fun begin! I use all the same concepts from gardening, as I do in arrangements; lots of different textures, repeating colors/textures, different shapes and I have a particular fondness for odd numbers, especially 3s. Our arrangements have a different look, which I’m very happy about. When I hear people say, “I just love your style!”, or “You’ve got the best flowers in town!” or my favorite “Make it Hip Tulip-ish!”
Each day I walk up Main Street, fumble for my keys, flip on and plug in the lights, get music going, put the displays outside, prop the door open, flip the sign, at about 10:00 Thorne from McCraw’s Lamp Shop calls out “Good morning!”, a little later Jack from the stained glass above Bailey Spencer Hardware bangs on the window, gives a wave and shouts “Mornin’!” and in the evening, they both call out to say good night. Doesn’t get any better than this!
