Celebrated guitarists, producers, band leaders and sonic shamans Luther Dickinson and JD Simo join forces in a trailblazing collaboration. The duo, known for their individual successes, mutual admiration, and deep friendship, have finally come together to create a musical project that transcends genres.

Luther Dickinson, one half of the 5-time Grammy-nominated North Mississippi All Stars and former Black Crowes lead guitarist has extensive production and session credits for artists like John Hiatt, Cedric Burnside, and William Bell. JD SIMO, the leader of his own solo project, boasts session and production credits for Jack White, Beyoncé, Chris Isaak, Stevie Nicks, Phil Lesh, and Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis movie.

It’s not a concert…it’s a party! Spend a nostalgic evening saluting 3 of the world’s most beloved musical groups who were instrumental in creating the Rock & Roll/Doo W*p sound: Cornell Gunter’s Coasters (Charlie Brown, Yakety Yak, Poison Ivy); The Platters featuring 4 of America’s premier singers performing their greatest hits (Only You, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, The Great Pretender); and The Drifters, one of Rock & Roll’s founding vocal groups touring the U.S. again under the auspices of their original management team with their 50 year catalog of hits (Under the Boardwalk, Up on the Roof, This Magic Moment, and On Broadway).

Combined, these three Rock & Roll Hall of Fame groups have been associated with well over forty of the top classic songs in Rock & Roll history. From “Under the Boardwalk” to “Only You” to “Yakety Yak”, very few artists can boast of a richer musical resume. This November, Academy Center of the Arts staff and board members are embracing a little fun (and a lot of facial hair!) for a big cause through Mustaches for Kids - M4K Lynchburg. We're growing mustaches, raising funds, and making a difference for local children’s charities—and we’d love your support!

One initiative close to our hearts is the Young Storytellers Program. Through this Academy-led program, we partner with local schools to identify students who face challenges in communication, whether due to language barriers, learning obstacles, or mental health struggles. Through individualized workshops, these students develop personal scripts that tell their unique stories. Then, professional actors bring these stories to life on stage, creating an empowering experience that builds confidence, connection, and creative expression.

We’re thrilled to be part of M4K Lynchburg and incredibly grateful for the community support that makes programs like Young Storytellers possible.

Our Mission

The Academy Center of the Arts is Greater Lynchburg’s center for arts, culture, and community building. Our mission is to serve our community through arts and culture, and we believe that our programming is essential for a thriving community, as it can lead to improved grades for students, increased memory retention rates for seniors, and a decreased poverty rate.

Each year, the Academy engages tens of thousands of Central Virginians through stage events, arts education, facilities rentals, outreach, and galleries exhibits, which result in a significant economic impact on the Greater Lynchburg area.

Our campus includes the Historic Academy Theatre (524 Main St.), the Joy & Lynch Christian Warehouse Theatre (519 Commerce St.), and our Patricia Harrington Members’ Lounge and Gallery building, which also hosts our offices (600 Main St.).
