I used to dread winter.. and now its welcomed.
Rest and reflection... and all the family traditions.
The first year without my grandma was not without tears... her simple presence was so comforting.
No doubt she was missed throughout the family, her phone calls and laugh, quick replies and advice. The camaraderie at the dinner table growing up was something that is hard to put into words... as I'm sure you all have similar stories, sounds, smells.. that take you back.
As I walked back from closing up the chickens and saw the warm glowing door... slowly approaching it while the winds whipped around me, I thought of my grandparents and their parents..... and how many times they did this. Just to provide us with eggs, or to bake a pie or cake for us... or feed us chicken soup while we were unwell.
Homesteading is all about the dedication, I suppose.... and carrying on those beautiful stories, the old ways and holding onto memories.
Tomorrow I will close up the coop and get the hens and rooster ready for the coming months... hang some Christmas lights ✨️ and decorate.
