Hey, we’re on the tour poster! ❤️
“David Dondero” Listening Room Session is coming up in a few weeks, Thursday, September 19th. As always, all sessions are free to attend, our doors open 1/2 hour before, join us!

Heading out on the road in September for a Midwest music and book tour. I'm still working on the tail end of the trip and will probably add a few shows between St. Louis and Pensacola at the end of September. Let me know if you're along that route and want to host one. Hope to see you out there!

Up next: “David Dondero” Listening Room Session on Thursday, September 19th at the house.

David Dondero, an American troubadour, was born in Duluth, Minnesota in 1969. His love of music began with folk rock and country of the early 70’s and evolved to include punk rock and hip hop of the 80’s. He spent his formative years in suburban Chicago and northern New Jersey listening to pirate radio and heavy metal. As a young man, music molded Dondero’s life.

Dondero began writing songs in the late 80’s while at Clemson University. Initially a drummer and lyricist, he formed Sunbrain in 1991. A post-punk indie rock quartet heavily influenced by Donovan and Fugazi. Sunbrain was signed by Grass Records and they recorded 3 albums. When the group disbanded he went on to play drums for the folk punk band, This Bike is a Pipe Bomb. After 2 years he left the band in 1998 and began his solo career. He’s been touring ever since and his music has taken him around the world multiple times.

His style and ongoing narratives are hard to fit into a particular genre. He manages to tackle difficult subject matter with a wry sense of humor. The music is inspired by heartbreak, hopefulness, everyday work, and his never-ending state of flux. Dondero’s lyrics are influenced by the angst of Black Flag, the wanderlust of Bruce Springsteen, the sentimentality of Paul Simon, and the politics of Woody Guthrie.

He’s shared bills and tours with Pedro the Lion, The Mountain Goats, Darren Hanlon, Daniel Johnston, and Against Me! In 2006, Bob Boilen and Robin Hilton of NPR put David on their list of the top ten greatest living songwriters. Aside from multiple years at South by Southwest, he was invited by Mudhoney as a featured artist at All Tomorrow’s Parties in Rye, England. God Speed You Black Emperor brought him to The Sled Island Festival in Calgary and he’s played at the Bellow Winter Music Festival in Australia under the recommendation of Australian songwriter Darren Hanlon.

Dondero has split seven inches with Mischief Brew and the Pine Hill Haints. He’s recorded ten albums and his 11th album called Immersion Therapy is slated to come out on Fluff and Gravy Records in the Summer of 2023. Recorded in Portland, OR, at Fluff and Gravy Studio. Dondero currently resides in Pensacola, FL, and is about to publish his first novel, Chaos the Cat.

“David Dondero” Listening Room Session

“South of the South”

I was just a tender chicken in the Florida rotisserie
My own sweat's basting me
Thunder storms are chasing me
I bit into a lighting bolt
My own tongue began to smoke
I woke up with an empty mouth
Watched the watch tick backwards
South of the south

The CSX vibrates the tracks
Mighty roaring shakes the shacks
Purple skies and orange moons
Plants are confident in June
The humidity - it's thick, you can cut it with a knife
If you'd like to take a breath here, honey
I'm gonna cut you out a slice

So I developed gills and I moved into the aquifer
Fell asleep in Wakulla Springs
Woke up down in Jupiter
Than I moved back to the land
High into an orange tree
Was set for life with citrus
But my body couldn't take this
Acidity

So I strolled down to Miami
Tried to find myself some friends
Found myself in South Beach
And I met some mannequins
Who smelled of coconuts and Coppertone
Like those smells real well
But as far as conversations go
I guess that it stopped at the start
Of the smell

It was Elvis and Sinatra
Now where's your wallet, man, I got ya'
But now if you're poor like me
They let poor people like me be
They say that North Beach is a war zone
High rise hotels hollowed out
But now we were living large
We were stepping out
Into a thirty dollar beach front motel
Down south of the south
South of the south
Down in north Miami
South of the south
My and my old lover Terry
South of the south
We were practically married

So I jumped my pogo stick
All the way to Ybor City
Where they burned up a couple blocks
And to me seemed like a pity
That was once a Cuban district and a center for the arts
Was now a mall like atmosphere
Homogonous and insincere
They burned it's heart right out
Down south of the south

So I became the snake bird
An old swamp turkey
And some redneck tried to shoot me
Tried to make swamp turkey jerky
But I evaded all his bullets
And I flew into the gulf
And I jumped upon a west wind out to a safer heaven
Out near Alcaniz and Balin
Down south
South of the south
In the town of Pensacola
Riding bikes like we were kids
Over cobble stones and brick
They fenced moonlit bridge
There's a sandlot shotgun shack
Tin roof all rusted out
And there's a couch on every front porch
Flapping screen doors
Ants on the apple cores
Pop's Boiled Peanuts and more
Down south
South of the south

South of the south
South of Opelika
South of the south
South of Tuscaloosa
South of the south
Old Alpharetta
South of the south
South Carolina
South of the south
Down south of the south

This week marks 10 years since the loss of a young Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo. Back in 2017, we welcomed Peter Mulvey to our stage where he shared his “Song for Michael Brown”. Take a moment, listen, and remember.

We ❤️ the tiny desk. Here’s our next guest artist, David Dondero, which NPR wrote:

He should be a name everyone knows by now. Instead, troubadour David Dondero returned to NPR having slept the night before in his car. Dondero travels from club to club, singing his well-crafted songs — songs that have his signature lyrics at their core. His lyrics can make you smile with their wit and hurt with their bite, all at the same time. Watch Dondero perform his well-crafted songs at Bob Boilen's desk in the NPR Music offices.

“David Dondero” Listening Room Session, Thursday, September 19th, 7:30pm, as always, FREE to attend.

Our upcoming guest Mark Stuart joined Steve Earle (who is his brother-in-law) on tour from 96-98 as part of The Dukes and recorded with the band on the album “El Corazón”. Mark, and his longtime partner Stacey Earle, have themselves toured across the country and beyond for several decades, with Madison being his latest stop on the road. Really special “listening room” session headed our way.

Join us this Friday night for “The Road to Montrose” w/Mark Stuart and “The Artwork of Jeri Vickmark Wilkinson” . Our doors open a bit earlier too, starting at 6:30pm, all at The BrickHouse.

We’re trying something different this season with an earlier start (just by a month) as we’re supporting our good friend Matt Fockler’s Montrose Music Festival 2024 next weekend by hosting “The Road to Montrose” w/Mark Stuart this Friday night. Mark is an incredibly talented singer-songwriter from Nashville who, along with his longtime partner Stacey Earle, has played some of our favorite venues across the country and beyond. (Yes, we have favorites) No doubt, quite the gem of a “listening room” session headed our way, so come on out and show your support for Mark, and future Montrose Festival guests too. Let’s build on Matt’s efforts and enjoy a great night of music at the 🧱 house.

We’re looking forward to our first “listening room” session of the season with “The Road to Montrose” w/Mark Stuart next Friday night at The BrickHouse. Great session headed our way.

These listening room sessions are something special, think of these as an intimate live concert which we encourage you as an audience to really listen and focus on the moment without the distractions of needless chatter or glowing screens. We often refer to these as like old MTV Unplugged or VH1 Storyteller sessions. Those were great. Perhaps the best part are the conversations that break out between our guest artists on stage and all of you - that back and forth dialogue often provides a lot of the story of an artist or the way a song came together. Beautiful stuff. One big thing we do ask is that you’re respectful and considerate of these sessions and our guests - it’s a very, very, small room - please take any phone calls or conversations outside the venue. We appreciate that. Thanks, as always, let’s pack the house, and we’ll see you all this season!
