Throwback portrait of Sarah Whelan I took for the April 2024 issue of Madison Magazine. Sarah is an actor who co-founded Bartell Theatre and is still actively involved with theatre. She was getting ready for the rehearsal of her latest show, “Overprint,” when I met her for this shot.

LEGACY GROWERS

Buried deep in Wisconsin’s agricultural past is the story of two farming settlements that built vibrant, thriving Black communities in Grant and Vernon counties. Now, centuries later, a new generation of Black farmers in Madison and Wisconsin is cultivating the spirit of those communities in burgeoning networks that attempt to defy the declining numbers of Black farmers nationwide.

Kynala Phillips digs into this history to tell the story of where Wisconsin’s Black farmers have been and where they’re going with farmers and organizations like

And, Emma Waldinger takes you into the hive with Gentle Breeze Honey and a few additional Madison-area beekeepers and honey programs. 🐝

Tim and Renée Farley met each other at a classical guitar house concert. He was a piano restorer and she was a music teacher. The rest as they say is history.

Before I arrived to photograph them, they had moved the Mason & Hamlin Model CC grand piano in front of the rows of pianos in their store. They patiently waited as I set up and tested my lights. I prompted them to look at each other and smile and they beamed at each other… I imagined like they did when they first met.

The Farleys are the most kind and gracious couple I’ve ever met and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to capture this image.

“Judy, Judy, Judy” sandwich from Stalzy’s Deli & Bakery voted as best sandwich by one of Madison Magazine’s editor in the October Best of Madison issue. I couldn’t agree more. It has two of my favorite cheeses (Muenster and Gouda) in it besides cheddar. Topped with creamy coleslaw and tomatoes in a perfectly grilled rye bread and you have a winner.

Ben & Reece wedding from last season.
It was an honor to photograph their special day. It was near perfect except for the rain that came right before the ceremony had started. Luckily it ended after the family pics and we're able to escape to the park for a few shots before the reception. Thank you Ben & Reece for letting me be part of your beautiful wedding!

The Putty Man
Height: At least 6 feet
Distinguishing characteristics: Shadowy demeanor, extra-long arms

Let’s face it: Theater balconies are unsettling as hell. Especially the dark ones that are difficult to see into from the ground floor. The balcony at the Majestic Theatre has been around since the vaudeville days of the early 1900s, and it’s apparently seen plenty of supernatural activity — including a ghost known as The Putty Man. A pair of women in the 1980s studying in the balcony were reportedly the first to see him — a mass of shadow with rubbery, Mr. Fantastic-esque arms. He waved one of his wild ’n’ shadowy appendages at them, sending them scurrying. Smart move, ladies.

Those globes light up when you touch them. And they don’t stay lit for very long. So I instructed Julie &Alex to touch a few of the globes behind them and I touched the ones in front of me and then posed them quick for this shot. We had fun timing it… 3,2,1…go!
