It has been quite a while since I shared a pair of these with you all. These are chopines. Between the 15th and 17th century these outrageous platform shoes were used both by noble women and courtesans. Their extreme height kept the filth of the streets from their clothing while also lifting them above the commonality in a literal as well as figurative sense.
The height of them varied considerably, though the tallest known extant pair, (not these), is 22 inches or 55.88 cm. Typically they were crafted in height to correspond to a person’s status. The more important you were, the higher your chopines lifted you.
Walking in them required skill, balance, and very often an attendant or two to stand ready to stabilize the lofty lady.
This surviving pair is wood and covered with buff colored leather.

WHOMST will we see there?!?!

There's plenty of fun to have by day, but by night, the fae will definitely shine!

Tickets to both balls are included in the weekend pass or can be purchased separately. Teens aged 13-17 are half price and children 12 and under are FREE!

Each evening kicks off with a fire show performed by the amazing Ohio Burn Unit at 8:00 and the balls start at 9:00.

This is a Tudor era child’s mitten, knitted from wool. It was found in the Finsbury area of London. In Tudor times Finsbury was covered by fields and we can imagine that perhaps a child lost their mitten while they were playing in the snow in the winter.

Knitting became popular in the 1500s. It was a good way for people to make clothes for their children but it is very rare to find knitted Tudor clothes still surviving today.
