The King and Queen and the Carnivale letters held by the other members of the Royal Court started the procession of many costumed participants and some giant puppets. I will share a few more in the next few days.

There were lots of happy people in the Soda Springs Pavilion where they were able to taste Gumbo from 13 different amateur or profession chefs who served up many versions of this Creole based food. Some of the professionals had very fun booth displays. Tidal Breeze Jazz, who played at the Art Festival, entertained the crowd as Gumbo was served up Saturday morning.

A couple of local artists in the Manitou Community who helped with the Art Festival have their art at Fields Park off El Paso Blvd. With this mild weather you might want to take a walk on the sidewalk along the creek there. Katie Curcio coordinated and worked the Kids Art Activity booth. Her "Alpine Sunflower" is on one of the metal tall stands. Susan Odiam joined the Festival Committee and helps us with many aspects of the Art Festival. Her "Mine Bird" showing there is an enlarged sample of her artwork that can also be seen at the Green Horse Gallery.

Many people know Julia L. Wright as the Coordinator of the Commonwheel Art Festival, others know of her as a feather artists. This is how she got here. She grew up in a small community in Wildwood Illinois surrounded by nature. She came to Colorado to study theater arts at UNC. She traveled to art festivals around the country for many years displaying various forms of fiber art. After moving to Manitou Springs in January of 1976, Julia joined Commonwheel and has been a member ever since. She enjoys live music, gardening, hiking, and nature in general as is evident in the lovely photographs that adorn various styles of card decks. There are numbered decks of playing cards, affirmation card decks and one deck has the names of wildflowers that children can use to play Concentration. She also uses these photos as illustrations in her books and journals. Julia creates fanciful masks and jewelry out of real feathers. Each feather, just like snowflakes, is unique and, therefore, every design is a true one of a kind. Feather masks are very comfortable to wear and can inspire people to create fantastic costumes to wear to let their inner child out to play and dance.
Enjoy a 10% discount on all of Julia’s feather art, books and cards throughout the month of February.

If you have a day off on Presidents Day, or work in downtown, they would be the perfect places to meet some friends for lunch or dinner.

Galentines Day is an unofficial holiday that happens on February 13th. It is the perfect day to celebrate female friendships and the bond between women. It can also be a day to celebrate any type of close, non-romantic friendships you want to spend a day together in a playful way. Take some time to get together with your friends today to honor the power of true friends that make your world a lovely place to be. Some of the businesses who donated prizes to the Art Festival Drawing would be lovely places to meet with your Galentine’s friends. You could start the day with breakfast or have lunch at Toasted Bistro, Persephone Grae’s Cafe & Juice Bar or The Loft. The Manitou Winery in the Historic Spa Building or The Loop Mexican Restaurant are fun places to share some adult beverages and an evening meal with friends.
