Who remembers the magic of Capriland’s? In collaboration with the Coventry Historical Society, Rooted Dreams is excited to help preserve a part of Coventry’s history with items reminiscent of Capriland’s. We have a variety of books, posters, and decorations from Capriland’s!

🌿Looking to start your own herb garden? We have herb charts and handbooks here in the shop.

🎃Get ready for Halloween with “A Witches Brew” by Adelma Grenier Simmons. Learn about the tales of witches in New England, how our ancestors used natural remedies as charms against witchcraft, and traditional dishes that were served at Capriland’s luncheons during the fall!

The magic of dead heading is that we’re still harvesting loads of zinnias off of our plants that started blooming many weeks ago. Zinnias benefit from being cut deeply and cut often.

Best bread in the neighborhood!

Just pulled the most beautiful honey oat wheat loaves out of the oven for the stand today! The stand will be stocked with loaves of sourdough this morning with cookies later this afternoon!

Foraging Connecticut

This slow paced walk will explore an 18th century kitchen garden to show how plants that are considered invasive in a modern garden and can usually be found in a field growing wild, were once grown with care for their useful properties. Continue down the Old Road to Norwich and into the Nathan Hale Forrest to comb for edible plant life.

Queen Anne's Lace is blossoming in the Nathan Hale Homestead kitchen garden. This white lacey flower has a single red spot near the center, legend says that Queen Anne of Britain, was very skilled in lace making and she pricked her finger staining her piece of work, and ever since that time Queen Anne’s Lace flowers have a red stain on them.

Queen Anne’s Lace is also known as Wild Carrot and is edible. It was often used as a diuretic, an antiseptic, used for soothing the digestive system, as a hallucinogenic and was used to terminate pregnancies.

BUT BE WARY Queen Anne's Lace is sometimes confused with the dangerous Poison Hemlock. How do you tell the difference? Poison Hemlock does not have a red spot and its stem is smooth. Queen Anne's Lace has little "hairs" the stem.
