Luncheon, Hair Fashion Show Gala Event at Country Club

Softer hairstyles with lines more flowing and more feminine, a break from the watermelon look of last season’s bouffant hairdos, was introduced at a Peach Tree Country Club luncheon co-sponsored by Rho Chapter, Phi Epsilon Phi Sorority, and the Yuba-Sutter Cosmetology Association.

The newest coiffure, “Dancing Hair,” in variations for daytime and evening wear, was shown in a number of hair colors tending toward soft and gentle shades of blended tones.

Everything from the “Twist” to go with one of the latest dance crazes, to the “Pink Champagned Waltz” was modeled by local women.

The spring and summer “dos” are designed to flatter the face, a contrast with the haystacks, bouffants and beehives which called attention mainly to themselves.

While still bouffant in the crown area, hairstyles are more head-hugging and are achieved with less rigid back-combing or “teasing” than last season.

Spring Dead Spot Research
by Tracy Shanahan, Course Superintendent

You may have noticed by now a number of orange dots and numbers on holes 15 and 16. Peach Tree is proud to host another research trial being conducted by the University of California at Riverside. UCR is the last bastion of turfgrass research on the west coast. Dr. Jim Baird leads the way at UCR and was previously a USGA Agronomist. He certainly has become one of golf’s best known advocate and aid to the maintenance industry.

The trial this year involves finding preventive efforts to control Spring Dead Spot, a disease becoming more and more common in bermudagrass stands. This soil borne fungal pathogen is an interesting beast. The fungi are active during the cooler fall time period as the bermudagrass has slowed top growth and begun to enter its annual dormancy. The fungi are eating the roots of the plants, and the attack is occurring at a point when we can not see the damage to the plants. The reason for the name “Spring Dead Spot” is that we won’t actually see the damaged plants until the bermudagrass begins to green up the following spring. The damage is certainly noticeable through bare circular or oval patches of dead bermudagrass ranging from a few inches to a couple feet in diameter.

The only way to treat the disease is through preventive applications, to which UCR is doing a large survey of different products and applications from manufacturers. There have been some great products identified through recent trials, but the fungicide treatment for fairways can be expensive, especially considering there needs to be two applications applied for best results. Other research from around the country has indicated that damage from the disease can vary depending upon how cold the winter is for us. The theory is that once the fungus has attacked and weakened the roots, the colder and harder frosts are what can “finish” off the plants and prevent any hope of recovery in spring.

Spring Dead Spot has not been an overwhelming issue for us as we typically do not have pressure to have perfect fairways by June of each year. We typically see recovery from our common bermudagrass stands by mid-July or so, once the turf begins to actively grow again in early summer. We certainly hope you don’t mind the orange dots on those two holes as we can take pride in the fact that Peach Tree remains a major player for golf in California and beyond!

⛳Get Right on the Rules⛳
Oh no! I accidentally moved my ball. What do I do now?

Accidental movement of your golf ball during a round is one of many areas in the Rules that underwent a lot of player-friendly change in the 2019 Rules. Let’s take a closer look at some of the most common ball at rest moved situations encountered during a round.

Searching for Your Ball:
If you are in the process of searching for your ball or trying to identify a ball you have found, there is no penalty if you accidentally cause it to move. As an example, if you are looking for your ball in an area with a lot of leaves or other debris on the ground and you accidentally kick your ball, there is no penalty. Simply replace it as closely as possible to the spot that you estimate where it originally lay. As a second example, if you find a ball in long grass, mark its location, and then accidentally bump and move that ball in the process of lifting it to identify it, there is also no penalty. Simply identify it, replace it if it is yours, and play on.

Accidental Movement on the Putting Green:
Another case where a penalty has been removed in the new Rules is for any kind of accidental movement of your ball on the putting green. All of the following would be included as long as the movement is accidental: hitting your ball with a practice swing, moving your ball while trying to mark it, kicking your ball, dropping a club on your ball, bumping your ball with your putter in addressing it, etc. In all of these cases, simply replace the ball and play on without penalty. This also applies to any accidental movement of a ball-marker on the putting green.

Accidental Movement Anywhere Other Than on the Putting Green:
As mentioned previously, accidental movement anywhere on the golf course other than the putting green will generally still be a penalty, unless one of the above exceptions apply. Let’s look at a few common examples. If your ball is in the fairway and you accidentally kick and move it, that will be a one-stroke penalty and the ball must be replaced on its original spot. If you move a leaf next to your ball in the rough and that causes your ball to move, the same penalty will apply. As a final example, if you accidentally touch your ball with your club in getting ready for a stroke and that causes your ball to move, that will also be a one-stroke penalty.

Ball Moved by Opponent or Outside Influence:
The term “outside influence” encompasses all other players in a stroke play competition as well as any person other than your opponent(s) in match play, your partner, or either of your caddies. It also includes animals. If one of these outside influences deliberately lifts or touches your ball or accidentally causes it to move, there is no penalty to anyone. Simply estimate the spot where the ball lay, replace it, and play on.

If your opponent deliberately lifts or touches your ball or causes it to move, the opponent will get one penalty stroke. You must then replace your ball, just like in all of the previously discussed scenarios.

Fore! -- Yuba College coeds make a pretty “fore-some” in a photo taken as they prepare to swing into spring action. The girls are golfing students of Coach Glenn Potter’s 1:30 p.m. class. They are (from left) sophomore Sandra Stinchfield of Sycamore in Colusa County, freshman Nancy Lee Justus of Gridley, sophomore Billie Fowler of Yuba City, and sophomore Joan Richards of Nicolaus.

"Peach Tree Opened - Officially"

Something - in the way of entertainment - for everybody was the goal of the committee planning the program for the Peach Tree Golf and Country Club’s grand opening last Sunday.

Providence saw that the day was clear, despite the rain of the previous evening. The warm sunshine brought out 300 persons - members and their families. (The club’s membership is 500).

The activities included games of baseball, badminton and volleyball. The swimming pool was open. There were free pony rides for the kids. And for the adults and teenagers there were driving and putting contests.

In the driving contest, Alice Huckins won first place in the women’s division. Henry Everett won first in the men’s division. For girls under 18, Betty Starr Coats came in first. For boys under 18, James Troncatty was the winner.

It was the first program arranged by the club’s entertainment committee headed by Gene Lonon. Others on the committee are Mrs. Henry Everett, Mrs. Robert Galligan, Charles Barnett, Charles Crete and Woodrow Best.

PHOTO CAPTION: There were lots of compliments and no complaints about the food served Sunday at the Grand Opening event. The clubhouse actually was opened on New Year’s Eve, but celebration of the event was delayed until things were more settled. “Chow call” brought adults and children alike in from the games to partake of barbecued beef, baked ham, hot dogs, beer and pop.

PHOTO CAPTION: The kids voted overwhelmingly in favor of the pony ride as the most popular activity at the Peach Tree Golf & Country Club’s Grand Opening. One thing that made the rides popular - with parents as well as the kids - was that they were free. But even pony riding can get to be boring after awhile, so there were other activities for children. And there was something that wasn’t planned - the toddlers found a pile of sand and spent time making sand castles.

Bunker Rakes - In or Out?
by Tracy Shanahan, Course Superintendent

Okay, perhaps trivial to some and super important to others, the debate about bunker rake placement has a large impact on maintenance operations. When we enjoy watching the professionals on television, there are many times when we as viewers never see bunker rakes. The standard for the professional golfer setup is to place rakes outside the bunkers on the opposite side of the main playing or shorter cut turfgrasses. They do this not only for aesthetics, but primarily to avoid any difficult rules decisions regarding a ball coming to rest directly or very near to a rake, thereby potentially influencing a shot into the bunker or for advancing the ball out of a bunker.

There are some tournaments we host whereby we maintain the same standard, namely Invitationals, NCGA/USGA qualifiers, or the AJGA as examples. However, our day-to-day operation is truly geared to becoming as efficient as possible with our maintenance practices, as well as trying to generate as much life as possible out of the bunker rakes themselves. Therefore, our standard preference is to keep the rakes inside the bunkers once you have used them to rake any footprints or playing marks/disturbances. The reasons are straightforward – we prefer to not have the mowers stop their machine, get off, and place the rakes out of their mowing pattern. A lot of mowing “efficiency” is marked by the number of acres mowed by hour, so every stop starts to eat into that number. Also, we unfortunately suffer a lot of breakage of rake handles as golf cart operators do not always pay attention to where they are travelling and drive over the handles. Now we start getting into financial efficiency that no matter how you slice it, there is an impact on operating costs and your dues! Lastly, I would also mention that aesthetically for the course, consistency in appearance plays a certain role in your visual assessment of the grounds. Having a consistent approach to leaving rakes in the bunkers could impact some people’s view of the golf course.

Probably the most important aspect of bunker rakes is to make sure you use them! A somewhat common complaint is that players don’t always rake their impact to the sand, leaving tracks and other imperfections for the next player to have to deal with. Poor etiquette on the golf course is just a demonstration of disrespect to your fellow members or golfers, so please always be respectful and take care of your bunkers and fix your divots and ball marks. Thank you, please enjoy your golf!

"Mischief Reported at Country Club" (plus an awesome Hal's Grubstake ad)

More mischief was reported at the Peach Tree Golf and Country Club yesterday but it is not likely this time that anyone will prosecute.

Yuba County sheriff’s deputies were called out to investigate someone riding a horse across the course.

The culprit they found was an ll-year-old boy who seemed to have a pretty good reason for being there. He was only after his dog which in turn was chasing a jack rabbit.
