One of the best early spring fillers… Penny Cress. If you’ve never had success with growing cress here’s what you need to do
If your planning your bed for next year we suggest laying down a tarp in the summer to kill the grass underneath.
You can plant a cover crop after you’ve killed back everything with a tarp. Make sure you kill and tarp your cover crop before it seeds! A cover crop will help improve the condition of the soil your cress grows in along with helping to keep weed pressure down. The added organic material will also help with moisture retention.
Once your cover crop is killed back you can sow seeds, we recommend heavy seeding in the late summer/ early fall. Follow up with daily watering until germination offers.
Cress is cold hardy and produces better when started in the fall and overwintered. This will also ensure the earliest setting of seed pods which is when you’ll harvest.
This method ensures a good bit of room for error. If your seeds don’t germinate, don’t worry. You can reseed the area again in mid to late winter. You can also plant multiple areas of penny cress at different times to ensure a long harvest. For this you will fall plant by direct seeding and then direct seed prenny cress every 2 weeks starting 12 weeks before your last frost.
