When I was 8, I really wanted a pet... let’s be honest, I really wanted a pony! The Valentine from my dad that year read: “Be my Valentine? And if I can’t have you, I want a hamster!” I eventually got a puppy! I felt so loved.

Now, I feel loved when Russ tucks the crispy fries from his dinner onto my plate before I finish my first bite. Knowing someone so well... the big things and the little things, that’s love.

What did this creative bride do with her bouquet?

“We were blown away by the flowers... I didn’t want to let my bouquet go and those pressed floral services are a little too rich for my blood, so I did a flat lay and took some photos and we’ll eventually print it to hang on a future home’s wall!”

A friend lost a parent last week and asked for advice on making a flower cover for the coffin. Loosing someone we love is so hard. Including something heartfelt and personal as part of saying goodbye can be cathartic regardless of if you make it with your own hands or work with a florist. My response…

Most florists who make funeral sprays and casket covers still use floral foam, but there are definitely options that are more sustainable. If you were here, I would make it with you, but will do my best to describe what I think would work well.

Funeral Sheaf - A funeral sheaf is a sustainable alternative to a floral foam casket cover and is made using similar techniques to making a bouquet. Basically, create a one sided presentation style bouquet(s) built on a flat surface like a dining room table. Angle or splay the stems and select branched greens and spray flowers create volume. If you make more than one bouquet they can be layered or joined. Make bouquets a day or two before and leave it in water until the day of the service, then take out and blot the stems and arrange on the casket

Funeral Spray/Swag - Create two sheafs with short cut stems placed stem to stem with the stems either overlapping side by side or mixed together like lacing your fingers together. Bind together with jute or raffia (and then use the stems as a base structure to fill in with greens and flowers to hide the stem join. Recommend finishing this item the day of the service because once the stems are joined the flowers are out of water (but if they are well hydrated should still last 6+ hours and the greens will last longer)

Whatever you choose to make to honor your father will be an expression of your love and that is the most important.
