Life of a Small Town Florist: The Drive for Purpose. Work more...or rest?
A small town florist finds herself torn at times between working harder or resting. We live in a society where purpose is often measured by the 'doing', the income, the harvest- and in small towns if the spending is low, the numbers show....and the temptation is to 'work harder'-
Even though you are raising a family, even though you forgot to eat because you were 'too busy', or that you wake up at 3 am wondering what more can be done or worried if you remembered to take the trash out or not....
Even though the Word calls HIS people to a day of rest, owning a business in a small town can make 'resting' incredibly difficult, even if you don't own one.
Often, when we don't make time for our wellness, we make time for our illness. I have often found my 'rest' occurs when I'm too sick to get out of bed. Yet some of my best ideas have come during periods of rest or unexpected blessings.
There's been times that the Father has convicted my heart that avoiding HIS day of rest is a form of disobedience.
Before I co-owned a flower shop, I worked in various fields of work from organic produce farming, accounting, to waitressing and at every job I would define my 'purpose' or my 'worthiness' by what I could 'do', by what return I could bring my employer. This often left me feeling guilty for missing work for an illness or a funeral.
The same theme showed up in wifehood, in motherhood, in being a member of society- did I show up enough? Did I work hard enough? Did I 'do' enough? Essentially, what I'm asking is 'Am I enough?"
Do I 'do' enough to prove I deserve to be here, to take up space?
Here's what's interesting though...
While we are called to work hard, we are also called to rest because the Father isn't interested in what more we can 'do' on our own. He desires the opportunity to show up for us.
HIS glory is revealed THROUGH us but NOT BY us.
I'm learning that resting in him involves TRUSTING in him. It's easy to say 'you trust the Father', but when push comes to shove...do you?
I've learning HE isn't concerned with me 'working harder' but rather 'leaning deeper into HIM' and trusting is part of why resting is so essential.
HE reminds me that my purpose is LIVED.....no matter where I am, no matter what I'm doing, because it's about WHO I AM because of WHO HE IS. I'm thankful that 'working harder' has nothing to do with whether someone is enough. I AM ENOUGH even if I lose a crop to a drought, if I forgot to take the trash out, or if I worked hard all week and decide to stay home and take it easy for the day.
Hebrews 4
Do you make time to rest? How can that resting period become more joyful for you?
