Happy Veterans Day from Camped 901.

I wanted to thank some of the veterans near and dear to my heart. My dad Martin and his brother, Rick, both served in the Navy. My grandpa, Jim, was a member of the Marine Corps.

Veterans: Thank you for your service. I am extremely grateful for the sacrifices you’ve made and are making, currently, to serve our country. I hope you feel appreciated today and everyday, that your commitment is honored and acknowledged in meaningful ways, and that you are supported in the transition to civilian life.

Civilian friends: “Once a marine, always a marine,” is something I’ve heard my Gramps say. For the veterans I know, end of enlistment is never an end of service—these brave, loyal people continue to serve, and many continue to pay a price for the gifts they give our country.

I hope one day the discourse around Veterans Day changes—that words are supplanted by action—and that, as communities, we find ways to support veterans and their families in a way that reflects the spirit of their service and their victory.

We think Renee Waddell Pinlac won “Mom of the Month” this October when she booked Camped 901 to create a fall-themed hangout space for her daughter and several friends. A quick pitch and a few pumpkins later—the scene was set for an awesome autumn Girls’ Night Glampout!

The teens took pictures, played games, carved pumpkins, made s’mores by the fire, and hung out all night in the space we made in this cozy canvas tent.

Yesterday I shared what Camped 901 does (create spaces for connection) and how we do it (tents/decor). I think it’s important to explain why.

I didn’t begin with a dream to become the “Titan of Tents” (could you imagine the commercial?—"One day only! Everything must go! Tell ‘em Evan sentchya! C’MON DOOOOWN!”)

For me, this is about living a meaningful life, and it started before the pandemic.

I’d been working at a desk when I went to the wilderness. Suddenly, I was in Utah—cold, hungry, and more alive than I’d ever been—standing on a literal mountaintop. I leaned into the emptiness and the wind held my weight as if it were the Hand of God.

Returning to Memphis (a different kind of wilderness), I clung to the vision I’d seen from the mountain of the Promised Land in the valley below.

When the pandemic hit, I quit my job, and made plan after plan to start a business—endless “whats” and “hows—but still couldn’t figure out the “why”.

In the wilderness, “why?” is easy. If you don’t find food, water, or shelter, you will die. In the lives we’ve constructed, lives of consumption, we’ve become disconnected from the land—from the struggle that is part of us.

I felt a longing to reconnect with myself, my family, with nature. It seemed many people did. As if our collective, cultural consciousness was punching a clock, asking “Why?... Why?... Why?”

Then I met a man who built a business helping people spend time with their loved ones, outdoors. It wasn’t about consumption, it was about connection.

As he shared what he’d learned, I saw this was a means by which I could help others reconnect with a part of themselves that, perhaps, had been lost.

It was the signpost I needed to find my way back to the mountaintop.

Through Camped 901, I’ve found a why—to model what it means to be a regenerative business, to give back more than I take, to be part of a community, and to reconnect with the essence of life I found in the wilderness.

Some people live “off” the land—as if it were not part of them. It is in learning to live “with” the land, that one learns to survive (and thrive) in the wilderness.

My name is Evan and I’m the owner of Camped 901. This is my dog, Lucy (she says, “Hi evrybuddee!”)

We’ve got a lot of new followers so I wanted to take a minute to welcome you to our page and to personally share my vision for this venture—which, I promise, will be more than just another business.

Although, since a lot of people have never seen a business like ours, I find it’s helpful to start with what we do.

Camped 901 is a direct-to-you glamping service. We create spaces for connection so you and your loved ones can “get away from it all” without leaving home. ��“OK…” I hear you say. “Sooo… what exactly *is* glamping?”��We take a traditional camping experience and elevate it with comfy canvas tents, memory-foam mattresses, stylish decor, and other thoughtful touches—board games, firepits, a polaroid camera (plus some secret surprises you’ll have to see for yourself 😉). For less than the cost of a weekend getaway, it’s an unforgettable experience without the hassle of travel, set up, tear down, or take-away. All you have to do is show up and enjoy!

In the days ahead, I’ll share more about why I started this business, specifically, and the plans I have to make Camped 901 not just sustainable, but regenerative—to give back more than we take from the city of Memphis.
