Elvis tribute returns to Shady Mountain Events for Christmas performance
By Ethan Nahté

"Santa Bring My Baby Back (To Me)" might not be exactly what's happening on Dec. 7 at Shady Mountain Events, but the venue is bringing back The King of Rock and Roll and Santa Claus will be in tow saying Ho! Ho! Ho!

Elvis tribute performer Josh Davis returns to Mena for a different show than the one he performed to a sold-out crowd in February entitled "Christmas with the King of Rock and Roll." With this show, it begins as a Christmas presentation before shaking the pelvis to the rock performance of Elvis' concert years.

"It's a totally different show," Davis said. "What makes the first half different from the second half is it focuses mainly, not only on Elvis' Christmas songs, but on a lot of the gospel Elvis did. There's also a little bit of Gaither music from Bill Gaither and his Homecoming band."

Elvis recorded one of Gaither's songs called "He Touched Me" in '71 with The Imperials, who first recorded the song in '65. It was released as a single, then became the title track for Elvis' second Grammy Award-winning album in 1972. The album went platinum in 1999.

Speaking about Davis' February performance, Sharee Boyd of Shady Mountain Events said, "He's very energetic. Very polite. I was very pleased with his performance. I thought his clothes were amazing, his energy was amazing. He has a big presence on stage and wonderful to work with."

Davis described what to expect from this show. "The first half will be about 45 minutes of Christmas and gospel. I'm not going to give too much away, but there's totally different attire in that show." Some of the outfits similar to ones Davis wears onstage range from $1,250 to $3,600 on clearance from the company where he purchases his pieces. "The first half is totally laid back, and it gives the audience the opportunity to know me more outside of the rhinestones."

Elvis' third album he ever recorded was originally titled "Elvis' Christmas Album." It was re-released a couple of more times. In the U.S., the album reached No. 1 on Billboard's Best Selling Pop LPs, No. 2 for Top Country Albums and No. 25 on the Billboard 200. The original release and the re-releases were either multi-platinum or diamond certified, selling over 17 million copies in the U.S. alone.

Davis stated the Christmas portion will include performances of "Blue Christmas," "Santa Claus is Back in Town," "White Christmas," and "Silent Night" to name a few. He also spoke about the gospel music. "There's a gospel medley Elvis did in his 'Elvis' '68 [TV] comeback special. It was three gospel songs rolled into one. It'll be in the show."

Those songs, "Where Could I go but to the Lord?" "Up Above My Head," and "Saved" were the first track of side two of the live "Elvis" soundtrack album.

Davis also plans on performing the gospel songs "So High" and a handful of other Elvis and Gaither tunes. There will also be a bit more of a tribute to the '68 comeback.

There will be a brief intermission as Davis changes outfits to perform "The Concert Years" half of the show, giving the audience plenty of time to refresh their drinks, be it water or non-alcoholic drinks, beer or cocktails at the cash bar, as well as holiday snacks and goodies. There will not be a dinner at this performance as there was at the previous show.

Davis said the second part of the show will be another 30-45 minutes performing.

Tickets and Santa photos
Tickets to see the event are $25 for regular seating and $50 for VIP seating. They are available at Goss Electronics (Radio Shack) on Highway 71 in Mena, online at ShadyMountainEvents.com, or call 479-234-7174. Tickets also available at the door the night of performance.

The Dec. 7 evening's festivities actually commence with photos with Santa Claus. Ol' Saint Nick will be available for photos from 5-6:30 p.m. Local photographer Lela Nordyke will be taking the photos. Boyd said she'll have a printer set up to print a quality 4" by 6" color matte print for $5.
Davis takes the stage at 7 p.m. for the Elvis performance.

Boyd said of the February show, "Everyone loved it. Everyone had a wonderful time. The women were screaming, whooping and hollering. I got a lot of thank-yous. I got a lot of, 'It was put together well.' They were pleased and thanking me for bringing this to Mena. They were very receptive."

Odds are Davis will put on just as an exciting show this time around, so put on your "Blue Suede Shoes" and prepare to "Rip it Up."
