This past month I reflect on six years of owning Merkels Floral Studio. To celebrate here are six fun facts you may not know about us:

🐚 This brick and mortar florist has been around since 1940. Originally based in Downtown Willoughby, operating out of a small storefront and shady basement that didn’t have working AC or heat. We quickly outgrew this space and I began looking for a new location after my first year here.

🐚 We don’t just do weddings and I think this is one of the coolest things about MFS. We are open 6 days a week for retail! You can stop in to pick up an arrangement or take advantage of our delivery service.

🐚 One of my first goals after taking over this longstanding florist was to continue to secure it’s future by partnering with a funeral home. I am grateful to say we are the proud florist of , whom we now also call neighbor as part of the BSD campus. Sympathy work is something we take great care and honor in doing.

🐚 On a more personal note of this story, prior to owning the florist, I owned a diner! My time with both businesses overlapped for 3 years. I was also pregnant for 9 of the months I did both. It was a wild time! I finished signing the paper work to sell my diner while still in the hospital after the birth of my daughter.

🐚 Another incredible partnership we are proud to be a part of is as the florist of . The space is a dream and their team is truly unmatched. We hold this venue and all the people and couples in it very close to our heart.

🐚 20% of small businesses fail in the first year. 50% fail within their first 5 years with the average life span being 7 years. Proud to be woman owned and beating all statistics in a country that allows me to do so.

I’m in awe of this journey, thanks from the bottom of my heart for being a part of it 🤍

If you’ve been around here for a while you know I love figuring out mechanics. There’s always more than one way to get to the end goal and I love the challenge of brainstorming the most creative yet efficient plan.

When there are limited structural options for a ceiling installation, try decking out the pillars surrounding the dance floor! Sometimes I love this option even more than overhead floral! I’ll add that it’s also always most impactful to work with the preexisting and natural flow of what a venue space already has to offer.

Top it off by hanging hundreds of carnations from the ceiling 🤤

Fun fact: carnations are one of my favorite flowers and also the flower of my daughter’s birth month!
