During the 2024 Jr. Livestock Auction at this year’s Merced County Fair, Roger and ChiChi Wood were presented with the Blue Ribbon Award, the Fair industry’s prestigious award created by Western Fairs Association (WFA) to recognize those who support and contribute to the quality of the fair.
Roger hosts a local radio program on KYOS 1480 called Community Conversation and invites guests to speak about local items of interest, including promoting the Merced County Fair each year. ChiChi Wood was a Merced County Fair Board Director from 2000 – 2003. Following her time on the Fair Board, she was a Board Member on the Friends of the Merced County Fair for 10 years, from 2009 – 2019, and was part of the effort to raise funds for the construction of the Hilmar Cheese Barn, which is the largest construction project at the fairgrounds within the past three decades.
Roger and ChiChi Wood are active supporters of the Merced County Fair. Every year since 2009, they have been purchasing 4-H and FFA large and small animal projects to support our livestock exhibitors. Congratulations again to Roger and ChiChi Wood as the 2024 Blue Ribbon Recipients and for all you do for our Fair, the exhibitors and the community.

The Merced County Fair is excited to once again bring you the Early Childhood Literacy Partnership! On June 8th & 9th we’ll welcome the Library Bookmobile to the Fair to distribute free books to children, and provide an opportunity for families to open a library card and even check out books right at the Fair! Now in our third year, we will add a new story hour from 4-5pm on Saturday, where celebrated local authors will conduct special readings for children and their families. 📚
In the past two years, a total of 1,750 books were given out – and it is anticipated that over 1,500 books will be given out at the 2024 Merced County Fair. There have also been 125 families who signed up for library cards – directly supporting continued reading. 📖
We are grateful for the support of Valley Children’s Healthcare whose collaboration has allowed us to form this joint partnership with the Merced County Library and First 5 Merced County. Our CEO Teresa Burrola said it best, “The partnership with Valley Children's has been wonderful and enables us to further engage and serve the community during our annual Fair. To see the excitement on the faces of these kids when they are handed a new book – it's magical. It was like a light switched on and we hope that light will continue to shine bright and encourage their skills in reading, which truly opens doors.” ✨

The 2024 Jr Livestock Auction is now underway! 4-H, FFA and Independent Exhibitors have been working hard all year with their market goats, lambs, swine and beef leading up to the annual auction, as they look to take home the top prize and price for their animals.
